OPERATION DRY WATER DURING THE FOURTH

The Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office is joining the U.S. Coast Guard, Wisconsin DNR, and others in the annual Operation Dry Water campaign July 4th through the 6th. During the three-day effort boaters will see an increase in outreach, education and enforcement surrounding boating under the influence. Alcohol use continues to be the leading known contributing factor in recreational boater deaths and a leading contributor in boating accidents. Operating under the influence applies to drugs as well as alcohol. Even some prescription drugs can make operating a boat unsafe. Alcohol and drugs can impair a boater’s judgement, balance, vision, and reaction time. They can intensify the effects of stressors such as sun, wind, noise, vibration, and motion. It is illegal to operate a recreational vessel with a blood alcohol concentration of .08 or higher or with a detectable amount of restricted controlled substance in your system in Wisconsin.

LINCOLN HILLS TRAGEDY

State Senator Joan Ballweg says the death of a youth counselor at the Lincoln Hills School this week is a real tragedy and underscores the need for new facilities for dangerous youthful offenders. She says fortunately the final stages of design for a new youth prison in Milwaukee County are underway. The state lawmaker from Markesan says many of the young offenders live in that area and efforts to rehabilitate them might be more successful if they are at a facility nearer to family and home. She says Lincoln Hills has been under a federal microscope for a long time, but it took that time for state legislators to agree on a site for a new corrections’ facility for youth. She notes that the state also has plans for two smaller facilities for youth to replace not only Lincoln Hills but the Copper Lake facility for girls.

CHILDREN NEED ADULT SUPERVISION FOR FIREWORKS HANDLING

The Emergency Department Director for SSM Health’s Ripon Community Hospital reminds people to handle fireworks carefully this Fourth of July holiday. Dr. Jason Geiger says kids in their late teens and young adults are the patients they see the most when it comes to fireworks injuries and accidents.  He says there are 10,000 ER visits a year with the most common age range from 15 to 19 years old followed by people in their twenties. He says even something as innocuous as a sparkler can be harmful to a child. They can burn at 1200 degrees Fahrenheit, enough to melt glass. He points out that children can become impatient if a sparkler doesn’t light right away so they do need adult supervision. According to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services in 2023 there were 126 emergency visits in Wisconsin for fireworks-related injuries. A quarter of those injured were children less than 18 years old. A rule of thumb is if it flies up in the air or explodes the firework is illegal.
