Aaron Nola tossed two-hit ball over seven shutout innings and Nick Castellanos hit a two-run homer to send the Philadelphia Phillies off to London with the best record in the National League after a 2-0 win over the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday.

The Phillies completed the three-game sweep of the NL Central leaders and improved to 44-19 overall as they head overseas for a weekend set against the New York Mets.

Nola (8-2) struck out five, walked none and has almost seemed like a bargain this season for the NL East leaders after signing a $172 million, seven-year contract in the offseason.

Jeff Hoffman tossed a scoreless eighth and José Alvarado worked the ninth for his 11th save.

Brewers starter Aaron Ashby (0-2) struggled with command in his second start after spending the 2023 season out of the majors as he recovered from shoulder surgery, though he did make seven minor league appearances.

The Phillies scored seven runs in the three games while Milwaukee only managed two.

Ashby allowed two-out walks in the second and third innings but finished unscathed. He wasn’t so lucky escaping his walks in the fifth. Ashby walked the first two batters before he got slugger Kyle Schwarber to hit into a double play. With a runner at third, Castellanos hit a 90 mph changeup into the left-center seats for his eighth homer of the year and a 2-0 lead.

Castellanos sent the Phillies to their fifth walk-off win of the season with a 10th inning double a night earlier. The 2023 All-Star has been on an uptick at the plate of late after a slow start, hitting .273 on the homestand.

Nola only ran into trouble in the sixth after William Contreras led off with a double and reached third base on a groundout. Willy Adames then hit a grounder to third that Alec Bohm fielded and threw a perfect strike to backup catcher Garrett Stubbs that nailed Adames for the second out. Nola retired former Phillies slugger Rhys Hoskins — booed in this at-bat — to end the inning. In other team news, Brewers: LHP Robert Gasser was placed on the 15-day injured list with a left flexor strain. Gasser had posted a 2-0 record and 2.57 ERA in five starts since making his major league debut last month. Gasser experienced tightness and soreness after his five-inning appearance Saturday in a 4-3, 10-inning victory over the Chicago White Sox.

The Brewers head to Detroit for the start of a three-game series that opens Friday with neither team having named a starter.

Elsewhere in the NL Central Wednesday the Cardinals beat the Astros 4-2, the Reds downed the Rockies 12-7, the Pirates over the Dodgers 10-6 and the Cubs edged the White Sox 7-6.  The Brewers lead the Cubs by 5 games in the division while the Cardinals are 6 games out, the Pirates 6 ½ and the Reds 7 games behind.

In the Midwest League Wednesday the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers won at home over Quad Cities 6-5. The T-Rats improve to 34-19 while Quad Cities drop to 23-30. The teams meet again tonight with the first pitch at 6:40 from Fox Cities Stadium.

After a one-hour and one-minute rain delay before the first pitch on Wednesday night in Wausau the Dock Spiders finally got underway in the third of four straight games against the Wausau Woodchucks. RHP Ethan Cole (Augustana) started for the Dock Spiders and went 5.0 innings and struck out nine batters but a late homer in the eighth inning for the Woodchucks by Deiten Lachance (McLennan CC) gave Wausau the 4-2 victory. Fond du Lac with the loss drops their third straight falling to 3-6, Wausau stays unbeaten improving to 9-0.

The Dock Spiders are back home Thursday for the fourth of four straight games against Wausau, first pitch is scheduled for 6:35. It’s also Hockey Night at Herr-Baker Field, and Pint Glass Giveaway for anyone 21 or older is presented by Busch Light.

The NBA Finals start tonight in Boston where the Celtics host the Dallas Mavericks. Tip-off is at 7:30 CDT.

Corey Linsley, a three-year team captain for the Los Angeles Chargers and former center for the Green Bay Packers, was released on Wednesday.

Linsley is ex.pected to retire after playing in three games last season due to a non-football, heart-related condition. He was the second-highest paid center in the league with an average contract value of $12.5 million.

Linsley played 10 seasons in the NFL. He was a fifth-round selection by Green Bay in 2014 and was with the Packers for seven seasons where he was an AP first-team All-Pro selection in 2020.
