Jackson Chourio hit a three-run homer and the Milwaukee Brewers extended Chicago’s slide to a season-high 11 games Sunday with a 6-3 victory over the White Sox.

Gary Sánchez had a two-run single and left fielder Christian Yelich threw out the potential tying run at the plate in the eighth inning as the NL Central leaders completed a three-game sweep. Milwaukee (36-23) has won a season-high five in a row and eight of 10 to move a season-best 13 games above .500.

Chicago has dropped 15 of 16 and owns the worst record in the majors at 15-45. Paul DeJong homered and drove in two runs for the White Sox, who are on the longest losing streak in the big leagues this year.

Freddy Peralta (4-3) struck out seven over five innings for his first win since April 30 against Tampa Bay.

Batting ninth, Chourio sent a first-pitch slider from starter Nick Nastrini (0-5) into the second level of seats in left field for the prized rookie’s sixth home run. The drive followed an RBI double by Jake Bauers and gave the Brewers a 4-2 lead in the second.

DeJong hit a solo homer in the fourth, trimming it to 4-3.

Chicago threatened with one out in the eighth but failed to score when Yelich caught Corey Julks’ flyball and fired a strike to catcher William Contreras to nail Tommy Pham at the plate and preserve the one-run lead.

Words were exchanged after Contreras bounced up from the play and looked back at Pham.

Sánchez blooped a base hit off John Brebbia with the bases loaded in the bottom half to make it 6-3.

Peralta was 0-3 in his previous five starts and struggled through the first when the White Sox pushed across two runs on three consecutive hits and DeJong’s sacrifice fly. Peralta retired the next seven batters before DeJong connected on a 1-2 fastball in the fourth for his ninth home run.

Peralta allowed three runs on four hits and a walk. Enoli Paredes picked up his first major league save with two innings of scoreless relief.

Nastrini gave up four runs and three hits over four innings in his fifth start.

Chicago center fielder Dominic Fletcher robbed Contreras of a three-run homer in the seventh with a leaping catch at the wall in right-center.

The Brewers are on the road tonight at Philadelphia to face the Phillies. They have not yet announced their starting pitcher. The Phillies send right-hander Zack Wheeler (6-3, 2:32 ERA) to the mound. First pitch is at 5:40.

In the Northwood’s Leauge Sunday, a two-run home run for Wausau in the eighth inning from Max Galvin (Oklahoma State) with two outs on Sunday at Herr-Baker Field lifts the Woodchucks over Fond du Lac, 8-4. The Dock Spiders drop to 3-4 on the season.

The UW-Oshkosh softball team’s historic postseason run came to a close on Saturday (June 1) as the Titans were defeated by Rowan University (N.J.) and placed fifth in the 2024 NCAA Division III Softball World Series.

This year’s edition of the World Series was hosted by East Texas Baptist University on Bell Park at Taylor Field.

This was the Titans’ third appearance in the World Series. They finished sixth in the 1988 finals hosted in Elmhurst, Ill. and fifth in the 2021 finals in Salem, Va.

The fourth seed in the tournament, they defeated fifth-seeded Virginia Wesleyan University (40-9) 4-1 past midnight on Thursday night (May 30) in a 9 hour and 28 minute marathon win. Thursday’s win is the first first round victory for the Titans in NCAA postseason history.

UW-Oshkosh then moved on to face Linfield University (Ore.), the top seed in the national championship on Friday, losing 4-2.

On Saturday, Oshkosh lost to Rowan University of New Jersey 7-2.

UW-Oshkosh finished its season with a 45-7 overall record, a WIAC record. The 45 wins is also a single season UW-Oshkosh record regardless of sport. The women’s volleyball team set the previous record at 44 wins during the 1990 campaign as it won both the WIAC regular season and tournament titles and placed ninth nationally in the NCAA Tournament.

The Titans claimed their fifth regular season conference title by posting a 12-2 mark in league play and won both the Oshkosh Regional and Angola Super Regional rounds of the NCAA Division III Softball Championship and went 1-2 in the World Series to secure a fifth-place finish, the second in program history.

Ritter headlined the 2024 All-WIAC selections for Oshkosh as the team received a program record six first team honorees. She became the third Titan in program history to be named to the first team four times. Nemetz earned the honor for the third straight year and both Garceau and Morgan Rau made their second appearances. Wittman was honored as a first team all-conference selection for the first time in her career.

Nemetz was Oshkosh’s first team member of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Region VIII Team, joined by Freismuth on the second team and both Ritter and Wittman on the third team.

Earning her third postseason honor, Nemetz was named to the NFCA All-America Third Team during the World Series banquet on May 29. Campbellsport’s Josh Onwunili started the day on Saturday with a state title in the Division 2 100-meter dash, running a 10.70. Later in the day, he would grab a second state title, winning the 200-meter dash as well with a 21.53. An impressive way to cap off his career, and a year of uncertainty, if he would be able to compete at the varsity level until regionals.

To the track, and in the 100-meter hurdles. Oshkosh West sophomore Sydnee Nelson pulls away for her first state championship win, running a 14.65.

In Division 2, Xavier’s Ben Olvey won the 110m hurdles by one one-hundredth of a second, about as close as it gets. A 14.89 to beat the 14.90 by Rylee Wendt of Martin Luther.

The Division 2 girl’s team title was tightly contested, with Freedom and Rice Lake both finishing with 45 team points. Notre Dame was close behind, with 38 team points.
