A World War II-era water bomber is making an appearance at this week’s EAA Airventure air show in Oshkosh. And since it arrived in Wisconsin on Saturday, the plane has been getting a lot of attention where it’s parked on Lake Winnebago. The 120-foot Martin Mars aircraft is the world’s largest flying boat. It is one of six made by the Navy as a troop and cargo hauler. The planes were later used as water bombers to fight forest fires. Now, this plane, named Hawaii Mars, is one of only two remaining in the world. It will put on four shows this week. Wayne Coulson, CEO of the Coulson group, says the plane will be loaded with 7,300 gallons of water that will be dropped on pyrotechnics.

The man then fled and responding officers fired shots at the vehicle, hitting him. He then left the squad car and took another vehicle from a woman, who was not hurt. The man was arrested and treated for injuries. The K9 was not injured. The other theft suspect sneaked away and called a taxi. He was arrested while he was in the cab.

New Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice Dan Kelly says he’ll put his personal beliefs aside when he takes the oath of office. Gov. Scott Walker appointed Kelly to replace retiring Justice David Prosser on Friday. Kelly is an attorney with no judicial experience. He wrote in application materials to Walker that he believes same-sex marriage robs the institution of meaning and affirmative action is akin to slavery. Walker introduced Kelly during a news conference Friday afternoon. Asked by reporters to explain his writings, Kelly declined to comment, saying justices shouldn’t comment on their personal philosophy. He stressed, however, that as soon as he steps into a courtroom his personal beliefs take a back seat to the law. Walker wouldn’t let Kelly answer any follow-up questions about his writings, saying he believed Kelly explained himself.

State attorneys have asked a federal judge to stay a ruling allowing people to vote without photo identification pending an appeal. U.S. District Judge Lynn Adelman in Milwaukee issued a preliminary injunction last week allowing people who haven’t been able to obtain IDs to vote in the Nov. 8 election if they sign an affidavit explain why they couldn’t get the identification. State Justice Department attorneys filed notice they would appeal the order with the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Friday. They also filed a motion with Adelman asking to stay the injunction while the appeal is pending, arguing they’ll likely win the appeal. They says the affidavit option is unnecessary, overboard, expensive and burdensome. They also filed a motion asking for an expedited briefing schedule and decision.
