GIRL’S ESCAPE LEADS TO SIGNIFICANT ARREST

Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s officials say a 12-year-old girl, a victim of attempted sexual assault, was able to break free from her captor and run to a private residence in the town of Oakfield early Sunday morning. The resident called to report the incident. The victim had fled from a vehicle in the area where an adult male had bound and blindfolded her and was attempting to assault her. She fought back, broke free from the suspect and his vehicle, and fled to the home for help. That kicked off an investigation that led to a SWAT operation at a residence on Marquette Street in the City of Fond du Lac Monday evening that led to the suspect being taken into custody without incident. The suspect is a 30 or 31 year old Nicaraguan man who entered the U.S. illegally from Mexico into Texas in October of 2021. He was picked up by border agents, processed at a federal facility, and released. The victim’s mother was also arrested for numerous crimes. She is suspected of accepting pay from the suspect in exchange for allowing him to spend time alone with the victim. The woman’s immigration status is still being determined. The girl and her siblings have been turned over to the protective custody of Fond du Lac County Human Services.

PORTAGE MAN WANTED IN CONNECTION WITH FATAL CRASH

Columbia County Sheriff’s officials are looking for a 26-year-old rural Portage man who fled on foot from a fatal accident scene in the Town of Lewiston late Sunday night. Deputies, Fire and EMS responded to the scene at 11:08 pm. There is probable cause to arrest him on felony charges related to his involvement in the crash. DODGE COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPUTY HITS HOUSE WHILE RESPONDING TO PURSUIT

Fox Lake Police are investigating an accident Monday where a Dodge County Sheriff’s deputy lost control of his squad car on a rain-covered roadway and crashed into a house at the intersection of State Highway 68 and County Highway A. The deputy was responding to the pursuit of a 58-year-old Wonewoc man wanted on a felony warrant for fleeing from his jury trial in Juneau County. A Dodge County Sheriff’s Sergeant spotted Harvey Cox’s vehicle and pursued it. The vehicle fled to the City of Waupun where Cox was arrested on the warrant, knowingly fleeing an officer, and 2 counts of felony bail jumping. The deputy suffered minor injuries when his squad car hit the house, but no one else was injured. Waupun and Fox Lake Police assisted the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office during the pursuit and accident.

TOURISM FUNDING

Green Lake County Supervisor Luke Dretske says when it comes to the county’s remaining American Rescue Plan Act or ARPA funds he would have liked to see some set aside to establish a grant program. He notes that tourism is a driver for the county’s economy and it would have been nice to establish a Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Development Grant to aid county cities, towns and villages with the events they put on or efforts to spruce up for visitors. Dretske says Princeton City Administrator Mary Lou Neubauer approached the County’s Finance Committee with a tourism-related request and received a less than warm welcome from some of the committee members.  He says the county should be more open to helping its municipalities with such requests. Tomorrow the Green Lake County Finance Committee will consider whether to use $900,000 in ARPA funds for a new County Highway Facility.

FAKE JOB HIRING SCAMS

An official with the state’s Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection says if a job where you work from home or set your own hours sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Michelle Reinen is the Administrator for the Division of Trade and Consumer Protection. She says fake job scams lure people in with promises of high pay, great benefits, easy tasks, flexible hours, work-from-home opportunities, or a chance at their dream job. She says don’t let the promises and fake job titles fool you. She says they may even set up an interview to get personal information out of you. They may send you a fake check to cover business purchases or expenses or ask you to download a program or website that will highjack your personal information. Courses of action she recommends are running an internet search on the name of the company or person hiring you, call them directly rather than respond by email, and never give money or your personal information to someone that contacts you unexpectedly.
