Bryan Reynolds went 5 for 5 with a homer and two doubles, Mitch Keller threw six shutout innings and the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 8-6 on Monday night.
Pittsburgh’s Jack Suwinski and Yasmani Grandal hit two-run homers.
Jake Bauers delivered his first career grand slam for the Brewers, who nearly came all the way back after trailing 7-2 in the eighth inning.
Milwaukee’s rally began after an error by shortstop Oneil Cruz helped the Brewers load the bases with nobody out in the eighth. Bauers capitalized by sending a 3-2 sinker from Josh Fleming over the right-field wall.
Andruw Monasterio drew a one-out walk from Hunter Stratton to put the potential tying run on base. As William Contreras looked at a third strike for the second out, Monasterio stole second and advanced to third when Grandal’s throw sailed into center field.
Stratton preserved Pittsburgh’s lead by striking out Christian Yelich. Reynolds then provided some insurance by leading off the ninth with a 421-foot blast to center against Joel Payamps to cap his first career five-hit game.
David Bednar retired the side in order in the ninth to earn his eighth save in 11 opportunities.
Suwinski put Pittsburgh ahead for good in the first inning by connecting on a 1-2 sinker from Colin Rea and delivering a 376-foot shot over the right-field wall. Grandal added a 424-foot drive to right-center off Mitch White to make it 7-2 in the eighth.
Their production at the plate helped make a winner of Keller, who has allowed just one run over 15 innings in his last two starts to improve his ERA from 5.18 to 3.93.
The Brewers left two men on base without scoring in the second, third, fifth and sixth innings.
Rea (3-1) struck out five and allowed three runs, six hits and one walk in six innings.
The Brewers reinstated Joel Payamps from the bereavement list and optioned RHP Janson Junk to Triple-A Nashville. RHP Corbin Martin was claimed off waivers by the Baltimore Orioles.
RHP Quinn Priester (0-3, 3.86 ERA) starts for the Pirates and RHP Joe Ross (1-4, 4.75) pitches for the Brewers on Tuesday. First pitch Is at 6:40.
Elsewhere in the NL Central Monday the Braves shutout the Cubs 2-0, the Cardinals beat the Angels 10-5 and the Diamondbacks edged the Reds 6-5. The Brewers remain a half-game ahead of the Cubs in the division, the Pirates are 5 games out, and the Reds and Cardinals are 7 games behind.\
In the NBA Eastern Conference Semi-Finals Monday night the Celtics took a 3-1 lead at Cleveland against the Cavaliers, 109-102. In the Western Conference Oklahoma City won at Dallas over the Mavericks, 100-96 to tie the series at 2 games-each.
Tonight in the Eastern Conference semi-finals, Indiana plays in New York against the Knicks with the series tied at 2. In the Western Conference Minnesota plays at Denver with that series also tied at 2 games-each.
The countdown to the 2025 NFL Draft officially will begin Tuesday, May 14, with a ceremonial Draft Handoff from Michigan to Wisconsin, as a themed football arrives in Milwaukee from Detroit via the Lake Express Ferry from Muskegon, Mich., and is carried north to Green Bay to arrive in the Lambeau Field Atrium where a Countdown Clock will be unveiled.
The day’s events will begin with the arrival of the 11:45 a.m. Lake Express Ferry at its Milwaukee location. After remarks from Murphy and NFL and state officials, a small group of bicyclists, consisting of riders from the Packers, Travel Wisconsin, Wisconsin Bike Fed and Green Bay-area bike shops and bicycle advocates, will depart on the Pedal to the Draft to Green Bay. The bicyclists will pass by and make brief stops at several prominent locations on the way, highlighting the bikeability of Wisconsin through its beautiful trails and roadways.
In Green Bay, the bicyclists will ride along Armed Forces Drive and stop at the Packers’ Ray Nitschke Field on the way to the Atrium. To celebrate the bike kid training camp tradition, Green Bay-area bike kids are invited to join the ride from Nitschke Field to the Atrium. Interested bike kids should be in position at the Armed Forces Drive entrance to Nitschke Field at 6 p.m. The group will then cross Oneida Street and ride into the Atrium for a ceremony that will unveil the 2025 NFL Draft Countdown Clock.
Members of the public are invited to attend the unveiling of the Countdown Clock, with the event scheduled to begin at approximately 6:30 p.m.
Fans are encouraged to follow Packers social media and packers.com to track the progress of #PedalToTheDraft as the bicyclists make their way to Green Bay.
The 2025 NFL Draft, set for April 24-26, is projected to attract approximately 250,000 attendees over the course of the three-day event and have an economic impact of $94 million in Wisconsin, including approximately $20 million in the Green Bay area.
The Kansas City Chiefs, who ended the 2023 NFL season with a Lombardi trophy, will help start the 2024 NFL season.
The NFL reported Kansas City will host the Baltimore Ravens in the regular-season opener on Thursday, Sept. 5.
The Chiefs beat the San Francisco 49ers in the Super Bowl after beating the Ravens in the AFC championship in January.
The rematch is at Arrowhead Stadium on Thursday, Sept. 5th, at 7:20 p.m. Central.
The Ravens were 13-4 in the regular season. The Chiefs went 11-6.

The Ripon High School track team competed in the Heather Johnson Invite at Wisconsin Dells High School last Friday.
On the boy’s side the team placed 5th out of nine schools with 82 points. Recording top finishes were Vicente Beltran, Aiden Ruedinger and Keegan Buetner. The boys 4 x 800 team was able to capture a third place finish as well.
DeForest won the meet with 160 points and were followed by Mauston in second place and Mauston in third.
On the girl’s side the Tigers finished 3rd out of 9 schools with 100.5 points. The girls 4 X 100 finished first with a time of 4:09. Top finishers included Karsyn Bauman, Victoria Rivera, Ashley Bradley and Emma Resop.
Winning the meet with 147.5 points was DeForest, followed by Sauk Prairie in second and Ripon in third.
The Tigers will travel to Plymouth, Tuesday May 14th, for the conference mee
