LAW ENFORCEMENT SCAM

Over the last couple of weeks, the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office has taken numerous calls from victims who report being contacted by a local law enforcement agency via phone. The scammer claims the victim needs to pay them bond money or the victim will be arrested. The scammer in these situations has been able to “spoof” a phone number that matches a phone number from the local law enforcement agency they claim they’re from. Often the scammer will request the victim to stay on the phone with them and tell them to go to a Bitcoin machine. Once there, the scammer will direct the victim to what wallet number to send the money to. The scammer will sound professional and have specific personal information about their victim. Sheriff’s officials remind residents, law enforcement or government agencies will never call you and demand that you send them cryptocurrency or gift care numbers.

ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION COSTS DISCUSSED

During a Congressional budget hearing this week the estimated costs were discussed of allowing 7 million illegal immigrants to cross our southern borders during the Biden Administration. According to the Federation for American Immigration Reform or FAIR the federal government’s cost burden associated with illegal immigration for 2023 alone totaled more than $150.7 billion. Wisconsin Congressman Glenn Grothman says some of that money went to nonprofits for providing programs to house and feed those immigrants. He says some of that spending was cut during the last budget. The federal lawmaker from Glenbeulah says that type of spending irritates people. The estimate arrived at by FAIR subtracts the tax revenue paid by illegal aliens-just under $32 billion-from the gross negative economic impact of illegal immigration, $182 billion.

CROSSROADS ACADEMY MOVE

Ripon Schools Superintendent Mary Whitrock says they will be pleased to have students of the Crossroads Academy attending the Ripon High School. The academy is for students who are credit deficient and don’t do well in a regular classroom setting. Whitrock says that doesn’t mean they aren’t responsible holding downs jobs and volunteering. The academy has been located at the First Congregational Church on Ransom Street the past 20 years.  Moving the academy to the high school would save the school district an estimated $24,000 a year in rental fees. Whitrock says it makes sense to have the academy at the high school because some of its students want to attend a few classes at the high school anyway, which would be more convenient for them.

FREE SESSION ON MEDICAL POWER OF ATTORNEY AT RIPON COMMUNITY HOSPITAL

SSM Health Ripon Community Hospital team members will be sharing free Medical Power of Attorney information and providing assistance near the hospital’s Commons from 10 am to 2 pm on Wednesday, May 22nd. Deb Toth is an advanced care planning specialist with SSM Health and will be on site for the free information about advance care planning and advance directive forms. The free sessions will be offered the fourth Wednesday of each month through August. She says it’s important to make decisions about the kind of health care you want in case you ever become unable to make those decisions yourself. Years ago she saw a close friend’s family struggle when her friend suffered a brain injury and they grappled with whether to prolong her life. That incident spurred her own decision about medical power of attorney and inspires her in the work she does today. She also says you should make clear your wishes about organ and tissue donation. Toth notes on May 22nd they can help you fill out the needed forms or just give you more information about them.
