Javier Assad pitched six sparkling innings, and the Chicago Cubs beat Freddy Peralta and the Milwaukee Brewers 5-0 on Sunday in the rubber game of their weekend set.
Assad (3-0) allowed four hits, struck out four and walked three, lowering his ERA to 1.66. The right-hander has permitted two or fewer runs in each of his seven starts this season.
“He’s just got weapons that just don’t let the hitter get comfortable ever,” Cubs manager Craig Counsell said.
Chicago posted two straight wins against Milwaukee after losing 3-1 on Friday. The starting pitchers for the Cubs combined for 18 1/3 scoreless innings in the series, allowing a total of nine hits.
Peralta (3-1) matched his career high with six walks in five innings. He allowed three hits and struck out five on a sunny, cool day at Wrigley Field. It was the right-hander’s first start since he was suspended five games for his role in a brawl with the Rays on Tuesday. He is appealing the punishment by Major League Baseball.
The Cubs (21-14) grabbed control with three runs in Peralta’s final inning. Nico Hoerner hit a two-run double, advanced on a groundout and scored on a two-out wild pitch.
Dansby Swanson added a leadoff homer in the sixth against Thyago Vieira, and Christopher Morel singled home Mike Tauchman in the seventh. Morel went 1 for 1 with three walks.
Milwaukee (20-13) put runners on first and second in the fourth and fifth, and Assad escaped each time. Oliver Dunn bounced to first for the final out of the fourth, and Tyler Black struck out looking in the fifth.
Assad also got some help from Swanson in the first when the Gold Glove shortstop made a sliding play on Willy Adames’ grounder for the final out, stranding a runner on third.
After Assad departed, Yency Almonte pitched two innings and Daniel Palencia finished the five-hitter.
The Brewers continue their road series tonight in Kansas City against the Royals with the first pitch at 6:40.
Elsewhere in the NL Central Sunday, the Pirates beat the Rockies 5-3, the White Sox downed the Cardinals 5-1 and the Reds were pounded by the Orioles 11-1. The Brewers and Cubs are tied for first in the division while the Reds are 4 ½ out, the Pirates 5 and the Cardinals are 5 ½ games out.
There was one game in the NBA playoffs Sunday as Cleveland won at home over Orlando 106-94, taking the series 4-3. Tonight the Pacers play at the Knicks in game one of their series. In the other game Minnesota is at Denver with the Timberwolves leading 1-0.
In the Stanley Cup Playoffs the Rangers won at home over the Hurricanes 4-3 to take a 1-0 lead in their series. In the other game Dallas won at home over Vegas 2-1, to take that series 4-3. Tonight Boston plays the first game of their series on the road against Florida.
On the PGA Tour Sunday Taylor Pendrith won the CJ Cup Byron Nelson tournament by one stroke over Ben Kohles. Alex Noren finished two strokes off the pace.
Mystik Dan has won the 150th Kentucky Derby in a photo finish. Mystik Dan just barely beat out Sierra Leone and Forever Young by a nose in a photo finish as all three reached the finish line.
This is now the 26th time that the Kentucky Derby has been decided by the length of a neck or less, and Mystik Dan reached the winner’s circle in one of the most thrilling finishes in recent memory at Churchill Downs.
Mystik Dan took the lead down the backstretch and it looked like no horse would be able to catch him, but that’s when both Sierra Leone and Forever Young made their move. As Mystik Dan began to slow a bit nearing the finish line, the two horses — seemingly pinned to one another — made the hard sprint to the finish line and nearly stole the victory away.
The owners of Mystik Dan have not confirmed if the horse will run in the Preekness Stakes on May 18th.
Kyle Larson came roaring around the outside of Chris Buescher on the final lap to win at Kansas Speedway Sunday. In the closest finish in NASCAR history, one that only became official with a grainy black-and-white photo at the line, the No. 5 car was declared the winner by a thousandth of a second.
Caitlin Clark made her WNBA debut Friday night and scored 21 points but the Indiana Fever lost at Dallas to the Wings, 79-76. Clark had a chance to tie the game but her 3-point shot from the deep right corner fell short. The Fever have one more preseason game before their regular season starts.
