FDL MAN WOUNDED IN DOMESTIC VIOLENCE INCIDENT
Fond du Lac Police say a 33-year-old Fond du Lac man suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound while trying to gain entry into a home in the 400 block of Dewberry Drive late Saturday night. Police got a 9-1-1 call for domestic violence occurring at the residence. The caller said a man was trying to get in through a back door and had a gun. While officers were responding the caller said they had heard a single gunshot and could no longer see the man. Officers arrived and found the man with a gunshot wound. They began life saving measures. Fond du Lac Fire and Rescue took the man to the hospital. He is in serious but stable condition.
FORMER FONDY WOMAN GETS SENTENCED TO MORE TIME FOR DANGEROUS DRIVING
The 46-year-old former Fond du Lac woman convicted in Green Lake County of causing a fatal traffic accident has now had more time added to her sentence for a driving incident in Fond du Lac County as well. Recently Jessica Knueppel pled guilty to second degree recklessly endangering safety, cocaine possession, and OWI 1st with a passenger under 16 charges. That will add 18 months in prison and 18 months of extended supervision to the Green Lake sentence of 8 years in prison and 4 years of extended supervision. In January the Sparta woman pled guilty to charges in Green Lake County court of second-degree reckless homicide and second degree recklessly endangering safety charges. Charges stemmed from a fatal accident on State Highway 23 near Green Lake County Highway W that occurred on September 29th, 2021. Fifty-one-year-old Steven La Tour of Appleton was killed in the crash. Investigators determined Knueppel’s SUV crossed over the centerline striking the SUV driven by La Tour head on.
BRIDGE CLOSURES IN OSHKOSH THIS WEEK
Four bridges in Oshkosh will be closed on different days this week. Each will be closed from 6 am to 4 pm on their scheduled day. Today the Wisconsin Street Bridge is closed, tomorrow the Congress/Oshkosh Avenue Bridge, Wednesday the Oregon/Jackson Street Bridge, and Thursday the Main Street Bridge. The schedule is subject to change due to weather. During the closure times, traffic may increase in other areas of the city. Drivers should plan accordingly and allow for extra travel time.
HALEI HEINZEL SELECTED AS NEXT ALICE IN DAIRYLAND
Halei Heinzel of Oconomowoc was selected over the weekend as Wisconsin’s 77th Alice in Dairyland. She will work for the next year as a full-time communications professional for the state’s Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection, educating the public about the importance of agriculture. She will graduate this month from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a degree in Life Sciences Communications. Before starting college, she was active in her high school’s FFA chapter. She graduated from the Farm and Industry Short Course program with certificates in Agribusiness Management and Dairy Farm Management. Halei was selected as the next Alice during the finals hosted in Door County this weekend. She will begin her term as the 77th Alice in Dairyland on July 8th. She succeeds Ashley Hagenow of Poynette. ST WENCESLAUS PROJECT
Ripon Area School District Superintendent Mary Whitrock says they are pleased to see the city will be doing the St. Wenceslaus Street improvement project. The district waived assessments for sidewalk improvements and will be paying their fair share for sidewalk installation near Ingalls Field, which are estimated at more than $60,000. Whitrock says the district also plans to add more lighting and trees around the field. The city is also making it a two-way street which will mean sidewalks will encroach a little more on people’s properties. Whitrock says it will eliminate some of the parking near the field. The city expects the project to go into the fall during some of the high school football season.
BASD FACILITY PROJECTS
Berlin Area School District Superintendent Emmett Durtschi says they will be using up their remaining federal COVID dollars for facility projects in the district. That includes rebuilding the playground at the Clay Lamberton Elementary School. Another project involves redoing the sound system in their high school auditorium. He says that system is 30 years old. They also got a generous donation from Greg and Susan Miller which included stocks. The District will be making improvements to the indoor pool including blocks and lane lines. Durtschi says they did well with the stocks so they talked to Greg Miller about doing another project and as a result will be resurfacing the gym floor which will happen in July. He notes that they needed to use their COVID funds by September.
FDL COUNTY FAIR TICKETS AVAILABLE NOW
It may be 72 days away, but tickets are already on sale for the 173rd edition of the Fond du Lac County Fair. There will be a preview night on Tuesday, July 16th with professional bull and barrel riding followed by fireworks. Opening night Wednesday will have a Tractor and Truck Pull. Thursday night’s Grandstand entertainment is Vanilla Ice and Rob Base. Friday night features Scottie McCreery, and Saturday there is rock music with Pop + Evil and Fuel. Fair Board President Katie Grinstead says organizing the fair is a year-round task. She says while there is food, fun, and entertainment the Fair is all about the kids and especially those who are exhibiting projects or animals. Grinstead says prices on tickets go up June 1st so if you plan to attend you can save some cash by buying tickets now. For ticket information visit the Fond du Lac County Fair’s website.
DRINKING WATER WEEK
Waupun Utilities is joining communities across North America to celebrate Drinking Water Week this week. It is an annual observance led by the American Water Works Association. The week serves to highlight the importance of safe drinking water and recognize the efforts of water professionals who keep it flowing around the clock. This year’s celebration coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Safe Drinking Water Act, a landmark law designed to safeguard the public by setting high drinking water quality standards.
