SECOND SERIOUS ACCIDENT AT DODGE COUNTY INTERSECTION IN TWO DAYS
For the second time in less than a 48-hour period the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office responded to a serious accident on U.S. Highway 151 at County Highway DE. This time a 77-year-old Beaver Dam woman was heading east on County Highway DE when she entered the intersection, and her vehicle was hit by a southbound vehicle driven by a 57-year-old Stoughton man. Both were taken to a local hospital, the woman with serious injuries and the man non-life-threatening injuries. Later the woman was flown to a trauma center. The accident happened shortly before noon Thursday. A similar accident occurred Tuesday afternoon at the same intersection. A 76-year-old Fall River woman suffered life-threatening injuries in that mishap and an 18-year-old Kewaskum man had non-life-threatening injuries.
BOND REDUCTION DENIED FOR ELIJAH VUE’S MOTHER
A preliminary hearing was held for the mother of Elijah Vue, Katrina Baur, and her boyfriendJesse Vang yesterday in Manitowoc County court. During the hearing charges were amended against Baur to include a felony charge of chronic neglect of a child. Both are charged with being party to the crime of neglecting a child under 6 years old, not resulting in harm. She is also charged with two misdemeanors of resisting or obstructing an officer. Baur’s lawyer also made a motion to modify her $15,000 cash bond. But prosecutor’s read a statement from Baur’s mother that said her daughter had severed ties with much of the family in 2022 and could potentially flee because of connections she has in other states. The judge denied the motion for bond modification. The preliminary hearings for both were adjourned to next Thursday. Vang is also expected to seek a reduction in bail but still doesn’t have a lawyer but is eligible for a public defender. His bond is set at $20,000 cash. Meanwhile the search continues for 3-year-old Elijah Vue. The reward for information leading to his location or the people responsible for his appearance has increased to $25,000.
SMUGGLING INVESTIGATION AT WAUPUN CORRECTIONAL
Federal authorities have been investigating an apparent smuggling operation involving 11 employees at Waupun Correctional Institution. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel first reported the investigation. A spokesperson for the Governor said the governor and Department of Corrections officials asked the U.S. Department of Justice and other federal authorities last June to launch the probe. The request was made after multiple sweeps of Waupun housing units revealed people in the prison were obtaining prohibited items such as cellphones and illegal drugs. An initial investigation by the Department of Corrections uncovered allegations that prison employees were involved. According to the DOC, 11 prison employees have been placed on administrative leave since last May.

GREEN LAKE COUNTY BROADBAND EXPANSION
Last month the Green Lake County Board got an update on broadband expansion from Bug Tussel LLC. County Supervisor Luke Dretske says Bug Tussel is putting in fiber optic in areas that don’t have an internet provider, but they are concentrating on main roads. He says people will have access to the fiber optics, but if they don’t have fiber optic in the area may have to pay for the wiring. Two areas with issues include the Town of Kingston due to dam work and the City of Princeton due to a conflicting provider. Supervisors were informed that 4 of the 6 towers are now mounted. Dretske says since Bug Tussel is working with multiple counties on broadband expansion he doesn’t want them to lose sight of the importance of keeping Green Lake County residents connected. Dretske says broadband is not only the future but the present and trying to provide those resources is key to growing our economy especially in a rural area.

SSM HEALTH PLASTIC SURGEON REACHES MILESTONE
Dr. Richard Schaefer, a board-certified plastic surgeon with the SSM Health Fond du Lac Regional Clinic, recently marked another milestone in his career. He completed his 1,000th patient treated for carpal tunnel release with special equipment and ultrasound guidance. Carpal tunnel release with ultrasound guidance relieves the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome while minimizing recovery time. Carpal tunnel syndrome is a common condition that affects an estimated 13 million people in the United States, and causes pain, numbness, and tingling in the hand and arm. Left untreated, it can cause long-term debilitation. Of the milestone Dr. Schaefer says, “The thing I’m most pleased with is the patient satisfaction after the procedure and how quickly patients are able to get back to their normal activities.”
HORICON MARSH EDUCATION AND VISITOR CENTER CLOSED
Wisconsin’s Department of Natural Resources tells us the Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center at N7725 Highway 28 in Dodge County is closed for the immediate future due to a boiler malfunction. On Wednesday, a service technician discovered a crack in the heat exchanger, causing carbon dioxide to leak from the boiler. While not at hazardous levels, once a leak is discovered, the boiler must be shut down and stay off until resolved. Until the boiler is replaced, the building is not being heated and is too cold to conduct normal operations. The DNR understands the importance of the center for visitors and will be making emergency repairs as soon as possible to limit disruption. Updates on the building’s reopening will be posted to the Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center property page.

DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME REMINDER
Daylight Saving Time begins early Sunday morning. It’s time to “Spring Forward” or set our clocks ahead an hour. Fire departments also remind residents that it is a good time to replace batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and replace those detectors if they don’t work. With the additional sunlight, Wisconsin Emergency Management says it is an ideal time to get your home ready to mitigate the effects of disasters. They recommend removing debris from your gutters, drains, and downspouts. Trim tree limbs and branches so they do not snap off during high winds and damage your home or contact you utility provider if they are hanging near power lines. If your home has a sump pump, test it to make sure it is clean and operable. Consider adding a battery-powered backup sump pump. Review your home insurance policies to ensure you are covered for hazards that threaten your area. More tips can be found at the Ready Wisconsin website.
