A Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s deputy rescued a 71-year-old man and his two dogs from a fire at N6708 Karst Drive in the Town of Lamartine this morning. A passerby called the County Communications Center at 7:48 am to report smoke coming from under the garage door of the residence. The man who was rescued also called to say his garage was on fire and he was having a hard time getting out of his residence. When the deputy arrived he forced entry and got the man and his pets to safety. Fire departments from Lamartine, Fond du Lac, the Town of Fond du Lac, Rosendale, and North Fond du Lac quickly extinguished the fire preventing it from spreading from the attached garage. Items inside the garage are believed to be a total loss. There was minor smoke damage throughout the home. The residence was ventilated and is still habitable. It is believed the fire started along the north wall of the garage where the homeowner was charging multiple lithium ion batteries for remote-controlled vehicles.
