The Bucks return from the All-Star break playing at Minnesota against the Timberwolves. Milwaukee (35-21) has gotten off to a slow start with new head coach Doc Rivers and have dropped to third in the Eastern Conference, 2 ½ games behind second-place Cleveland and 8 ½ games behind the first place Celtics.. Milwaukee has lost two straight and is 3-7 over its last 10 games.
Minnesota (39-16) is leading the Western Conference 1 ½ games ahead of the Oklahoma City Thunder.
The Wisconsin Herd, NBA G League affiliate of the Milwaukee Bucks, lost to the Rip City Remix 116-104, snapping the Herd’s six-game winning streak.
Malachi Smith and Milwaukee Bucks two-way player Ryan Rollins led the team with 21 points each while Wenyen Gabriel followed with a double-double of 20 points and 17 rebounds.
The Rip City Remix’s top scorer was Antoine Davis with 41 points while Taze Moore added 25 points.
New Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley spent over 30 minutes yesterday taling to the media. Hafley takes over for Joe Barry, who was fired after three seasons.
“If we’ve got guys who can press, lets line up and get hands on people,” said new defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley. “I think that’s important. You’ve got a guy who can play a zone third, who can read 2 to 1, lets do it and go get the ball. The things I believe in, in defense, is whether you are playing 4-3, 3-4, press man, which I do love, zone coverage with vision and break, quarters, match, it comes down to can you put the players you have in the best position to succeed. We try and make it simple for the players so they can play fast. So they don’t have to think. So they can be confident and not be afraid to make mistakes. So they can go out there and play fearless and play with their hair on fair and run and hit and cover and get off blocks and tackle. That’s the beauty of the scheme.”
And on the very back end of the defense, the post safety as Hafley calls it, will be big with this scheme. Hafley has been a secondary and defensive backs coach before in the NFL and knows the importance of that position.
“I want a guy who can erase things,” Hafley said. “We have to eliminate explosive plays when we play this defense. So if a run hits up the middle, this guy has to come out of the middle of the field with his hair on fire and gets the guy down. I also want him to be a guy, when a ball carrier is wrapped up, he goes in and finishes off the pile. I want a guy who can go from sideline to sideline and takes the ball away. I think that position has to be a guy with high ball production.”
Before a sold-out crowd at Indiana’s Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall on Thursday, Iowa star Caitlin Clark might have felt at times like most of the 17,222 in attendance were guarding her. That’s how hard the No. 14 Hoosiers made things on Clark and the No. 4 Hawkeyes, winning 86-69.
The 17-point margin of defeat was the biggest for Iowa since it lost by 17 to LSU in last season’s national championship game. Clark’s 24 points were eight below her average and marked her lowest scoring output since Dec. 2, when she also had 24 in a victory over Bowling Green. It’s her second-lowest total of the season; her lowest was 21 on Nov. 25 against Florida Gulf Coast.
A week ago at home in Iowa City, Clark had a school-record 49 points in breaking the NCAA women’s basketball career scoring record. The Hawkeyes hadn’t played since then until Thursday, while the Hoosiers were coming off an 86-66 loss at Illinois on Monday.
Clark, who was 8-of-26 from the field overall and 3-of-16 from 3-point range, said Indiana’s defense was one of the toughest Iowa has faced this season.
