From Wayne Mausser:

Ziaire Williams and GG Jackson scored 27 points apiece, and the Memphis Grizzlies held on for a 113-110 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks on Thursday night in the last game for both teams before the All-Star break.

Vince Williams added 18 points and 12 rebounds for Memphis. Ziaire Williams’ points were a career high.

Giannis Antetokounmpo led the Bucks with 35 points and 12 assists, his 43rd double-double of the season. Damian Lillard finished with 24 points and seven assists. Bobby Portis added 15 points and Brook Lopez had 14 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks.

Memphis held a nine-point lead with 49 seconds left, but consecutive 3-pointers from Malik Beasley brought the Bucks within 113-110 with 29.2 left. Milwaukee had the last possession, but a scramble at midcourt for the ball took up a lot of the remaining clock, and Lillard’s 3-pointer at the horn was short as Memphis won its second straight.

While the teams were deadlocked at the half, Memphis took the lead to nine points on a couple of occasions near the midway point of the third. But the Grizzlies’ depleted frontline could do little to stop Antetokounmpo going downhill on his drives to the basket.

Three quick buckets inside with about 5 minutes to play gave Milwaukee a 100-98 lead. The teams would trade leads until a 3-pointer from Jackson and an alley-oop dunk by Ziaire Williams and the ensuing foul shot took the Memphis lead to 107-102 with 2:15 left.

The Memphis lead would reach 92-82 late in the third as the Grizzlies shot 76% in the period, including connecting on all four 3-points attempts.

For the first half, Milwaukee couldn’t shake Memphis, and the teams were tied at 57 at the break. Antetokounmpo took over in the second quarter, with 10 points – hitting all five of his shots – and handing out four assists.

The Bucks visit Minnesota on Feb. 23.

Caitlin Clark has now scored more points than any other woman in NCAA Division I history.

With a 3-point bucket in the first quarter of Thursday night’s game against Michigan at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, Clark passed Washington’s Kelsey Plum as the leading scorer ever in the top division’s women’s game as Iowa won 106-100.

Clark also scored 49 points, setting an all-time school record for points in a game and also had 13 assists.

Kaylee Martin chipped in wth 20 points.

Clark scored the first 8 points in the game Thursday and head coach Lisa Bluder called a timeout to give her a standing ovation from the fans at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

She has more records and possible championships to chase. She could still pass ‘Pistol’ Pete Maravich’s scoring record to become the highest scorer in NCAA Division I history, men or women. Maravich scored 3,667 points in three seasons at LSU from 1967-1970.

The 4th ranked Hawkeyes are now 12-2 in the Big Ten and 22-3 overall.

Patrick Cantlay shot a 7-uuder par 64 to take the first round lead in the Genesis Invitational. He leads Cam Davis, Luke List and Jason Day by one stroke.

Tiger Woods made his return to the tour this season and shot 1-over par.

Authorities in Kansas City said Thursday that the mass shooting that left one person dead and 22 injured at the Chiets’ Super Bowl celebration appeared to have stemmed from a dispute among several people.

Police Chief Stacey Graves said Thursday that the total number of victims is 23, including Lisa Lopez-Galvan, who was killed in the shooting. Graves said that the 22 people injured in the shooting ranged between the ages of 8 and 47 years old and that half of the injured were under the age of 16.

Fire Chief Ross Grundyson said the victims included eight critically hurt and seven in serious condition.

Three people were detained — two of whom are juveniles — and firearms were recovered during the mayhem, police said. But investigators are calling for witnesses, people with cellphone footage and victims of the violence to call a dedicated hotline. The detainees can be held for 24 hours before charges will have to be filed or they will have to be released.
