WAUPUN INMATED CHARGED WITH ATTEMPTED HOMICIDE
Dodge County prosecutors have charged a 49-year-old Waupun Correctional inmate with attempted first-degree intentional homicide and aggravated battery intending great bodily harm. A criminal complaint was filed against William Lasalle last Thursday. According to the complaint on January 24th prison staff was sent to a cell Lasalle was in for a reported stabbing. They found the victim lying on his back in the top bunk bed with blood on and around him. The victim had multiple puncture wounds to his right arm, chest, and left foot. NEW FEEDING AND BAITING BAN FOR OZAUKEE COUNTY
The state’s Department of Natural Resources recently learned from the state’s Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection that a farm-raised deer on a deer farm in Sheboygan County tested positive for chronic wasting disease. The positive result is within 10 miles of Fond du Lac, Ozaukee and Washington county borders, resulting in a new baiting and feeding ban that goes into effect on Thursday. State law requires that the DNR enact a three-year baiting and feeding ban in counties where CWD has been detected and a two-year ban in adjoining counties within 10 miles of a CWD detection. If additional CWD cases are found during the lifetime of a baiting and feeding ban, the ban will renew for an additional two or three years. The recent detection means Ozaukee County will begin a two-year baiting and feeding ban on Thursday. Sheboygan, Fond du Lac and Washington counties will renew the bans already in place.
TOURISM OPPORTUNITY FUND
State Representative Alex Dallman and State Senator Joan Ballweg testified before the Assembly Tourism Committee last month about a bill they co-authored to ease the financial burden on hosting large-scale public events. It would create a fund at the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation. Dallman says the grant funding would support communities in their efforts to attract highly sought after events such as the NFL Draft or NBA All-Star game. He notes those types of events would stimulate economic development. The state lawmaker from Green Lake says the Opportunity Fund would help with costs for the application process for those big events. Dallman says money was included in the State Budget for the Opportunity Fund, the bill would provide a way to tap into it. To be awarded a grant, entities must provide matching funds and a positive cost/benefit analysis as part of their application. (Representative Alex Dallman photo with Senator Joan Ballweg).

BASD COMMUNITY EDUCATION AND RECREATION COORDINATOR NEEDED
The Berlin Area School District is looking for someone to run its new Community Education and Recreation Department. The position would be about 25 to 28 hours a week. Berlin Schools Superintendent Emmett Durtschi says with the city of Berlin scaling back on recreational programs due to budget issues, the school district is filling that niche by opening some of its facilities to the community for recreational and educational programs for both youth and adults. He says their “B Active” programs began modestly by opening the pool to lap and open swim programs for only $2. However they would like to open up more of their facilities to public recreational or educational use. Durtschi says the ideal candidate for the position should have a passion for working with children and adults. He’s also hoping that person can make the position their own. To learn more about the position contact the Berlin Area School District offices. (Berlin Area School District photo).

OSHKOSH ARPA FUNDING APPPLCIATIONS BEING TAKEN
The City of Oshkosh is inviting local entities that serve Oshkosh residents to submit funding proposals for eligible projects and initiatives to make use of the city’s allocation of American Rescue Plan Act funds. Agencies that may have previously applied to the city or another governmental entity for ARPA funds are eligible to submit a new application for the remaining funds. The application deadline is Friday, March 1st. To date the Council has allocated $2.7 million of the ARPA funds. For details about criteria and the ARPA Funding Application documents can be found on the city’s website in the “Hot Topics” section.
