DENSE FOG ADVISORY UNTIL 10 AM

A Dense Fog Advisory is in effect for Columbia, Dodge, Fond du Lac, Green Lake, Sheboygan, and Washington counties until 10 am this morning. Visibility could be a quarter of a mile or less. Low visibility could make driving conditions hazardous. Some slick spots are possible on area roadways when temperatures are below freezing.

HORICON CHASE SUSPECT BACK IN COURT TOMORROW

A 32-year-old Milwaukee man suspected of leading Horicon Police on a short vehicle chase last month is being held in the Dodge County Jail on a $2,000 cash bond. A public defender is being appointed for Roy Morgan who returns to court for a preliminary hearing tomorrow. On January 28th a police sergeant saw a car with heavily tinted windows traveling faster than the 25 mile an hour speed limit on Washington Street. A records check found the vehicle’s registration was suspended. The car turned south onto Valley Street and a traffic stop was attempted. The vehicle ignored the sergeant’s lights and sirens. It increased its speeds as it entered River Bend Park going more than 40 miles an hour in the park. Eventually the vehicle lost control in the gravel parking lot due to wet slushy conditions.  Morgan is charged with felony fleeing, and marijuana and drug paraphernalia possession.

TROOPER TREVOR CASPER POST OFFICE BILL

Bipartisan legislation that would designate the U.S. Post Office on Fremont Street in Kiel as the “Trooper Trevor J. Casper Post Office Building” has passed through the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability. The next step for the bill is a vote on the House floor. Congressman Glenn Grothman led the entire Wisconsin Congressional delegation on introducing the bill last September. Trooper Trevor Casper was shot and killed in a fatal exchange of gun fire with a murder and bank robbery suspect in Fond du Lac on March 24th of 2015. The suspect was also killed in the gun battle. Congressman Grothman says, “Renaming this post office in his honor serves as a lasting tribute to this young man who was unwavering in his commitment to keeping our streets safe.” Casper is the youngest police officer to be killed in the line of duty in the state’s history.

LISTING FOR LAKE STURGEON WOULD BE DEVASTATING

More than 70 years of hard work building up Wisconsin’s lake sturgeon population could be undone if the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service decides to list the fish as endangered. A decision has to be made by June 30th. Margaret Stadig is a sturgeon biologist for the State’s Department of Natural Resources working out of the Oshkosh Office. Stadig says if lake sturgeon are listed as endangered it would be devastating.  She says, “There’s actually no way to continue what I do going forward. We would actually have to overhaul the system and lose 70-plus years of information and data”.  Stadig says Wisconsin has a strong sturgeon population numbering over 40,000 sturgeon. She says the Wisconsin DNR has actually been partnering with Georgia and Tennessee in helping them revitalize their sturgeon population. Congressmen Glenn Grothman and Mike Gallagher have introduced a bill that would proactively exempt the state of Wisconsin from any listing of lake sturgeon under the Endangered Species Act.

PAY FOR PERFORMANCE FOR FUTURE HOMELESSNESS PROGRAMS

A bill introduced by State Representative Alex Dallman would create a pay for performance structure for future state-funded grants to organizations addressing homelessness. The state lawmaker from Green Lake says public spending on programs that address homelessness have little accountability. He says the organizations that are more successful at getting people back to work and into homes would get more funding diverting funds away from programs that aren’t as successful.  The bill would also establish a framework in which to move individuals who are camping illegally on the streets to structured and sanctioned camping areas on public property away from dense commercial and residential areas.

ID FOR VOTING

The state’s Department of Transportation Division of Motor Vehicles reminds voters to check and be sure that they have the proper identification needed to vote in this month’s primary on Tuesday, February 20th.  Wisconsin driver licenses or IDs are the most common form of identification used for voting purposes. A federally complaint REAL ID card is not required to show at the polls. The Wisconsin Elections Commission notes other forms of identification are valid for voting, such as military or student ID cards. Voters looking to get their first Wisconsin ID can turn to the DMV for help. To obtain an official ID card, there are documentation requirements such as a birth certificate. If all documentation is not readily available, the DMV has a process that may be used to obtain a receipt valid for voting while the remaining documents or verifications are obtained.  The DMV offers this service and ID cards for voting purposes free of charge. The DMV’s toll-free hotline number 844-588-1069 is available for questions on obtaining an ID that can be used to vote.

GENERAL TRANSPORTATION AIDS

Governor Tony Evers and the state’s Department of Transportation Tuesday announced that municipalities across the state have received more than $138 million in first quarterly payments to maintain roads, highways, and bridges. Governor Evers says last year alone over 900 miles of roads and over 200 bridges were improved. For this calendar year, local governments will receive more than $536 million in General Transportation Aids financial assistance. Governor Evers says, “Since Day One, our administration has been working to make sure Wisconsin’s infrastructure is ready to meet the needs of a 21st-century workforce and a 21st-century economy.”
