5 January 2024 Sports

The first battle between Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo and San Antonio Spurs rookie sensation Victor Wembanyama exceeded the hype.

Antetokounmpo had 44 points and 14 rebounds and Milwaukee overcame an electric performance by Wembanyama on his 20th birthday to beat San Antonio 125-121 on Thursday night.

Wembanyama had 27 points, nine rebounds, five blocks, altered numerous shots and was 10 from 18 from the field.  Devin Vassell led the Spurs with 34.

Wembanyama’s first meeting with Antetokounmpo was delayed by the French rookie’s sprained ankle Dec. 19 in Milwaukee, but it proved to be worth the wait.

“He’s an unbelievable talent,” Antetokounmpo said. “Can score any time he wants. Plays the right way. Plays to win. It was great playing against him.”

The 7-footers dueled in the final minutes with both hitting clutch 3-pointers and making critical plays defensively.

Damian Lillard finished with 25 points and 10 assists.

The Bucks are at Houston on Saturday night.

The Packers host the Bears Sunday in the 208th matchup between the two teams. Green Bay leads in the all-time series 106-95 with 6 ties in one of the oldest and most intense rivalries in all of sports.

A win by the 8-8 Packers against the 7-9 Bears means a playoff berth.  If the Packers lose there’s still a slight chance they could make the postseason.  Green Bay won the season-opener at Chicago 38-20.  Since then both teams have had their ups and downs but both teams are riding a two-game winning streak and Chicago has won 4 of its 5 games.

Packers quarterback Jordan Love was named the NFC Offensive player of the week and on the season has thrown 30 touchdown passes and rushed for four touchdowns. On the injury side of things, the Packers continued to see all their receivers practice on Thursday. But RB A.J. Dillon did not practice again and did not sound super optimistic about playing Sunday. And LG Elgton Jenkins sat out practice again. He has recently rested on Wednesday, but this week sat out Thursday as well after getting rolled up last week in Minnesota.

Sunday’s pregame starts at 1:00 with the tipoff at 3:25 and can be heard on FM 102.3,The Bug.
