The Packers return to the practice field today getting ready for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Sunday at Lambeau Field.  Green Bay will try to bounce back from a last minute 24-22 road loss to the Giants in Monday Night Football. The Packers dropped to 6-7 but are still have the seventh seed in the Wild Card hunt.  Tampa Bay, also 6-7, are tied with the Falcons and Saints for first place in the NFC South.

In other team news, the Packers have released CB Kyu Blu Kelly (kai-you blue), signed WR Thyrick Pitts to the practice squad and released LB Austin Ajiake (AH-g-kay) from the practice squad. The transactions were announced Tuesday by General Manager Brian Gutekunst.

(thigh-rick) Pitts (6-2, 201), a rookie, was originally signed by the Chicago Bears as an undrafted free agent out of the University of Delaware in May 2023. He was released by the Bears in early August and claimed off waivers by the New England Patriots. He went on to spend training camp with the Patriots and had a brief stint on New England’s practice squad. In college, Pitts played in 59 contests and recorded 172 receptions for 2,429 yards (14.1 avg.) and 23 touchdowns. He was named first-team All-CAA for the 2020-21 season, second-team All-CAA for the 2021 fall season and third-team All-CAA for 2022. Pitts will wear No. 16 for the Packers.

Former Oshkosh North standout Tyrese Haliburton and the Indiana Pacers visit the Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee tonight.  The Packers knocked the Bucks out of the NBA In-Season Tournament at Las Vegas last only to lose to the Lakers in the championship game. Milwaukee is 16-7 and tied for second with the Magic in the Eastern Conference, 1 ½ games behind the Celtics.  The Pacers come in at 13-8, good for fourth in the Eastern Conference.

The Minnesota Vikings have decided to feature a new quarterback under center in Week 15.

Veteran Nick Mullens will be the starter in Saturday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals, NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported, per sources informed of the situation.

The Vikings later announced the news.

Mullens, who played in the fourth quarter in Sunday’s 3-0 win in Las Vegas, gets the start over Josh Dobbs, who had started the past four games after heading to Minnesota in a trade deadline deal  with the Cardinals.

In Week 14, Mullens went 9 of 13 for 83 yards to help lead the Vikings to a win after he came on in relief of Dobbs.

After a weekend visit to Madison, Tyler Van Dyke announced Tuesday he is transferring to Wisconsin.

The quarterback spent the past three seasons as starter for the Miami Hurricanes, throwing for 2,703 yards with 19 touchdowns and 12 interceptions this past season.

Van Dyke entered the transfer portal on Nov. 28, shortly after Miami finished the regular season with a 7-5 record.

Tanner Mordecai, who started nine games for the Badgers this past season and was sidelined for three with a broken finger, is in his final year of college football eligibility.

The Badgers already have two transfer quarterbacks. They added Braedyn Locke, who started while Mordecai was hurt, from Mississippi State in early 2023 and Nick Evers from Oklahoma in Dec. 2022.

Van Dyke, who will have one year of eligibility remaining, comes to Madison with 7,478 career passing yards, 54 touchdowns and 23 interceptions.

Men’s College Basketball

UW-Green Bay 70 held on to beat the  University of Chicago 68 in Chicago.

With the play clock winding down, Noah Reynolds drove in for a layup. His shot skidded across the top of the basket.

Luckily for the Phoenix, Elijah Jones was right under the basket, jumping up for the putback bucket that gave Green Bay a two-point lead with 0.5 seconds on the clock.

UIC threw the ball deep down the court and into the hands of Okani. He threw up a shot but it hit the glass and fell down, giving the Phoenix a thrilling victory.

Green Bay’s two-point advantage in the final 0.5 seconds was the Phoenix only lead of the night.

Jones, who knocked in the game-winning bucket, finished with a double-double 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Phoenix.

Reynolds was a huge contributor for GB, finishing with both a game and career-high 31 points in 34 minutes. It’s the first time a Green Bay player has scored 30+ points since Feb. 21, 2020 when JayQuan McCloud had 32 against Detroit Mercy.

Joe Ross and the Milwaukee Brewers finalized their $1.75 million, one-year contract on Tuesday as the former Washington Nationals right-hander returns from Tommy John surgery.

Ross, 30, hasn’t pitched in a major league game since August 2021. He went 0-0 with a 5.14 ERA in eight appearances with San Francisco Giants minor league teams from Aug. 22 to Sept. 24 this year.

He had his second Tommy John surgery on June 10, 2022, with Los Angeles Dodgers head team physician Dr. Neal ElAttrache. Ross also had Tommy John surgery on July 19, 2017, with Texas Rangers team physician Dr. Keith Meister.

Ross is 26-28 with a 4.26 ERA in 76 starts and 22 relief appearances, striking out 403 and walking 141 in 443 1/3 innings.

He pitched for the Nationals from 2015-19, opted out of the pandemic-shortened 2020 season and then returned to the Nationals in 2021. He went 5-9 with a 4.17 ERA in 2021 in 19 starts and one relief outing.
