Enrollment Count Taken Today
It’s an important day for public school districts across the state as they take their “Third Friday” enrollment count. The account taken each September helps determine state aid. Ripon Area Schools Superintendent Mary Whitrock says they have been pretty steady in their enrollment recently even with open enrollment. She says, “You know our rough estimate showed we are up about one student. Those are just our estimates that third Friday will tell us exactly who is in the seats. We still have about plus 20 in terms of our open enrollment in so that’s good.” She says there was some slow decline in enrollment in past years just with changes in the size of the community of Ripon and that’s tapered off a bit, which they are happy to see.
Murder Suspects Lawyers Say Search Was Not Legal
Attorneys for a Fox Lake murder suspect maintain a search of a property, which turned up the body of 27-year-old Sesalie Dixon should not have been conducted. During a hearing in Dodge County court this week audio and video from a dashcam was played in which Marjorie Jones, the mother of the suspect, could be heard telling deputies she didn’t mind the property being searched, but felt a warrant should be obtained first. Jones was sentenced to six years in prison for her role in covering up the murder 38-year-old Laverne Ware, Jr. is suspected of committing. Ware’s lawyers contend the search shouldn’t have been conducted because a warrant wasn’t obtained. A two-week jury trial is scheduled next March. Dixon was Ware’s girlfriend. She was shot in the head and her body was found in the cab of his pickup truck which was in a garage on the property. The murder was committed in December of 2016.
Mosquitoes Assist In Arrest
Campbellsport Police got an assist from our pesky mosquito population during the pursuit of theft suspects. Police say a suspect stole a case of vodka and a basket full of booze from the Campbellsport Piggly Wiggly. As Police Chief Tom Dornbrook arrived the suspect got into a vehicle and the driver took off. At one point the vehicle stopped and the passenger got out and ran. Later the driver fled on foot into a cornfield, but gave himself up due to the ravenous mosquitoes. It’s estimated more than $1,400 worth of liquor has been stolen from the supermarket over the last month. The second suspect is still at large.

Septemberfest Car Show
An official with the Ripon Area Chamber of Commerce says they were happy with the turnout for last weekend’s Septemberfest especially for the 20th Anniversary of the Watson Street Car Show. Chamber Executive Director Jason Mansmith says they had 187 cars participate. An added attraction was the Ring Brothers, custom car builders and designers from Spring Green. He says, “You know they came in and they were able to talk to some of our car enthusiasts down there, able to give them some advice, they brought in one of their project cars which will be completed next year, kind of talked about some future projects they have going on as well.” The next big event for the Chamber will be the Wine Walk in November.
