The Victory Monday at Lambeau Field is maybe the sweetest yet this year for the Packers after taking down the Super Bowl champs, the Chiefs. Green Bay is now 6-6 overall, after winning three straight and four of their last five games.
They also slide into that seventh playoff spot. But there’s still a lot of time left with fives games to be played.
This team is getting hot at the right time. You can see the shift with the Packers these last few weeks with a different mentality making sure they attack early and establish dominance.
Meanwhile, this Packers defense has now held their opponents to 24 or less points in eight straight games. That’s the longest streak in the league.
The Packers have made this surge without some of their top veteran players.
Cornerback Jaire Alexander has missed four straight games with a shoulder injury. Running back Aaron Jones was out for a second straight week with a knee injury. Left tackle David Bakhtiari played just one game before lingering knee issues knocked him out for the remainder of the season.
They’ve benefited from the development of first-year starting quarterback Jordan Love, who has thrown eight touchdown passes without an interception during this win streak. The Packers gained 382 yards Sunday, which marked the fifth straight game in which they had at least 375 yards. That’s the Packers’ longest streak of consecutive 375-yard games within a single season since 2013, when they also did it in five straight games.
Green Bay is on the road Monday night against the Giants. Their final five games are against the New York Giants (4-8), Tampa Bay Buccaneers (5-7), Carolina Panthers (1-11), Minnesota Vikings (6-6) and Chicago Bears (4-8).
Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence suffered what was initially diagnosed as an ankle sprain in a 34-31 overtime loss to the Cincinnati Bengals Monday night and will undergo an MRI on Tuesday, according to NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero reported.
Head coach Doug Pederson did not have update following the game and confirmed Lawrence will have more tests Tuesday.
Lawrence sustained the injury in the fourth quarter with the score tied, 28-28, and 5:25 remaining. He was stepped on by his offensive lineman, Walker Little, during a drop back, and was then bent backward awkwardly while on the ground.
At the time of his departure, he was 22 of 29 for 259 yards and two passing touchdowns, plus a score on the ground.
His 125.4 passer rating was his best of the season, and his 75.9 completion percentage was his second-best. He had Jacksonville in the game, and he was giving it a chance to take over the No. 1 seed. The Jags now sit in the No. 4 slot.
Veteran backup C.J. Beathard entered the game in relief following a field-goal drive by Cincinnati and led a three-point drive of his own to help force overtime.
Beathard was unable to capitalize on the extra frame as Cincy had to punt after a 26-yard drive stalled, after which the Bengals drove down for a game-winning field goal by Evan McPherson.
Meanwhile Bengals quarterback Jake Browning was 32 of 37 for 354 yards and a touchdown to Ja’ Mar Chase ,who caught 11 passes for 149 yards.
The defeat dropped the Jaguars to 8-4 with a cloud hanging over the quarterback situation. The Bengals, now 6-6, kept their playoff hopes alive.
The Bucks host the Knicks tonight in an NBA In-Season Tournament game. Milwaukee is 14-6 while New York comes in at 12-1.
In men’s college basketball tonight, #23 Wisconsin is at Michigan State. The Badgers are coming off a win at the Kohl Center Saturday over then #3 Marquette.
Veteran left-hander Wade Miley is returning to the Milwaukee Brewers after testing the free agent waters, ESPN reported Monday citing unnamed sources.
Last month, Miley declined a $10 million mutual option. Declining the option gave Miley a $1 million payout.
ESPN says the new deal is for one year for $8.5 million with incentives that could raise that to $11 million, and it includes a mutual option for 2025.
Miley went 9-4 in 23 starts for the Brewers last season, recording a 3.14 ERA. He’s a soft-tossing left-hander who finds his success in groundball outs, getting 46% of his outs there compared to 16% by strikeout.
It is Arizona’s turn to sit atop The Associated Press Top 25 men’s college basketball poll..
The Wildcats rose to No. 1 in Monday’s poll for the first time in nearly nine years, making Tommy Lloyd’s squad the third team to hold the top spot this season. Last week’s No. 1 team, Purdue, slid after an overtime loss at Northwestern.
Arizona claimed 59 of 63 first-place votes to move up one spot, putting the Wildcats comfortably ahead of preseason No. 1 Kansas. The Jayhawks rose three spots to No. 2 with a win against last season’s NCAA champion, Connecticut.
Houston rose three spots to No. 3, while the Boilermakers fell to fourth after the Northwestern loss. UConn slid only one spot to No. 5 after the loss at Kansas, followed by Baylor.
Gonzaga and North Carolina cracked the top 10 for the first time this season.
The Bulldogs jumped four spots to No. 7 after a neutral-court win against USC. The Tar Heels jumped eight spots to No. 9 after beating Tennessee in the ACC/SEC Challenge, followed by a home comeback win against Florida State.
The Tar Heels’ leap marked the week’s biggest jump, though No. 13 Colorado State was right behind them after rising seven spots on the strength of its 8-0 start. There was also a six-spot rise for No. 19 Oklahoma, which made its poll debut last week.
In all, 14 teams climbed from last week’s poll, including No. 10 Creighton rising five spots to rejoin the top 10 after spending the first three polls at No. 8.
Duke took the biggest tumble of the week of 15 spots to land at No. 22 after a pair of road losses against unranked opponents.
No. 15 Miami, No. 17 Tennessee and No. 21 Texas A&M each fell seven spots.
Three teams joined this week’s rankings.
Wisconsin jumped in at No. 23 after beating then-No. 3 Marquette at home, pushing the Badgers to five straight wins, and dropping the Golden Eagles to No. 8. Clemson followed at No. 24 amid a 7-0 start, while San Diego State is back in the poll at No. 25 for the first time since sitting at No. 17 in the preseason.
Villanova (No. 18), Mississippi State (No. 21) Alabama (No. 23) fell out of the poll.
Wisconsin Badgers wide receivers Chimere Dike and Skyler Bell will play their final years of college football elsewhere. Both announced Monday their plans to enter the transfer portal.
Dike, a Waukesha native, caught 19 passes for 328 yards and 1 TD this year. Over his four-year career, Dike caught 97 passes for 1,478 yards and 9 TD. He will have one year of eligibility remaining as a graduate transfer.
Bell, from Bronx, N.Y., caught 38 passes for 296 yards and 1 TD in 2023. In three years, he caught 69 passes for 755 yards and 6 TD. He will have two years of eligibility remaining.
