FATAL PLANE CRASH IN MANITOWOC COUNTY

Manitowoc County Sheriff’s officials say the pilot of a small plane was killed when it crashed in a wooded area in the Town of Kossuth. Dispatchers received a call shortly before 10 am Thursday morning from the Chicago Center Air Traffic Control Center about a low wing aircraft that had not arrived at its destination. The last known area of the aircraft was near the Manitowoc County Airport. Deputies checked the area around the airport and found the downed plane in a wooded area, submerged in a pond.  The man piloting the plane was the only one onboard. The Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Office, Federal Aviation Administration, and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash.

SAFE HAVEN LAW BABY BOXES

State Senator Joan Ballweg is hoping a tweaking of the state’s Safe Haven law will save the lives of additional newborns. The Safe Haven Law allows the mother of a child to leave a baby with law enforcement, a fire house or hospital no questions asked within 72 hours of the baby’s birth. The state lawmaker from Markesan says an addendum to that law would allow the use of baby boxes at hospitals, law enforcement and fire stations to keep the baby safe until someone could get to it. The boxes would be temperature-controlled and would be equipped with an alarm that goes off when the infant is deposited in the box. Last year Ballweg was co-author of bill that added information about the Safe Haven law to health education curriculums in high schools to make sure students were aware of that option.

HALLOWEEN SAFETY

Many communities over the next five days will be holding trick or treating times when drivers and parents should be more mindful of children’s safety. Green Lake County Chief Deputy Matt Vande Kolk urges motorists to be on the lookout for little princesses and superheroes that might dart out between vehicles. The state’s Department of Health Services has some tips too. Choose costumes that are light-colored and more visible to motorists. Use reflective tape to decorate costumes and candy bags. Use make-up rather than a mask. Costumes should be short so a child will not trip. Costumes should also be flame-retardant. Remind children to walk, not run, and to only cross streets at crosswalks. Children should be accompanied by a responsible adult who has a flashlight. For those entertaining trick-or-treaters make sure your front porch is well lit with a porch light on and paths to your home obstacle-free. When children are done inspect their treats. You can find local trick-or-treating times listed on our community calendar at Hometown Broadcasting.com.
