P.J. Locke saved the Denver Broncos from another second-half meltdown Sunday, intercepting Jordan Love’s deep pass in the closing minutes to preserve a 19-17 win over the Green Bay Packers.

Locke — subbing for safety Kareem Jackson, who was ejected for the second time this season following an illegal high hit earlier in the fourth quarter on tight end Luke Musgrave — picked off the throw intended for Samori Toure just after the two-minute warning.

The Broncos ran out the clock to give coach Sean Payton his first win at home in four tries and end a dubious streak in which Denver had lost 10 consecutive games when leading at halftime.

This time, it was a 9-0 lead the Broncos (2-5) frittered away before regaining the advantage on Wil Lutz’s 52-yard field goal with 3:50 remaining.

The Packers (2-4) scored all of their points in the second half and took a 17-16 lead on Love’s 4-yard touchdown pass to Jayden Reed that went off Romeo Doubs’ hands.

Doubs pulled the Packers within 16-10 in the third quarter on a 16-yard touchdown catch that both he and cornerback Patrick Surtain II caught as they tumbled to the ground.

Russell Wilson rebounded from his worst game as a Bronco — a 95-yard performance at Kansas City last week in the Broncos’ 16th consecutive loss to the Chiefs — to throw for 195 yards on 20-of-29 passing with one touchdown, a 18-yarder to Courtland Sutton that gave Denver a 16-3 lead.

The only scoring in the first half was a trio of field goals by Lutz.

Packers rookie Anders Carlson, who grew up in Colorado Springs, missed his first field-goal attempt of the season when his 43-yard try in the second quarter sailed wide left. He was good from 29 yards out to open the second half.

The Packers have been outscored 63-6 in the first half of their last four games. Musgrave left the game after that hit. The Packers said he had hurt an ankle.

Four Packers were injured in the second quarter: DL Devonte Wyatt (knee), S Darnell Savage (calf), CB Eric Stokes (hamstring) and WR Jayden Reed (shin).

The Packers host Minnesota next Sunday.

Elsewhere in the NFC North Baltimore pounded Detroit 38-3 and the Bears beat the Raiders 38-12. Minnesota hosts San Francisco in Monday Night Football.

In Sunday Night Football Philadelphia beat Miami 31-17 to improve to 6-1 while the Dolphins dropped to 5-2.

Braedyn Locke threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to tackle Nolan Rucci with 27 seconds left Saturday, capping an 18-point fourth-quarter explosion that gave the Wisconsin a stunning 25-21 come-from-behind win over Illinois Saturday.

Illinois build a 14-7 lead in the first half at halftime, then added a 12-yard touchdown run in the third quarter by Kaden Feagin for a 21-7 lead going into the fourth quarter.

Locke was 21-of-41 passing for 240 yards and two touchdowns in his first start since taking over for the injured Tanner Mordecai. Braelon Allen, the Big Ten’s leading rusher, ran for 145 yards for the Badgers.

Luke Altmyer threw two short touchdown passes and ran for 103 yards for Illinois (3-5,1-4 Big Ten). Feagin rushed for 97 yards as Illinois gained 226 yards on the ground.

Wisconsin (5-2, 3-1) scored on a 41-yard field goal by Nathanial Vakos and a 20-yard pass from Locke to Will Pauling in the fourth quarter that was followed by a two-point conversion pass from Locke to Riley Nowakowski before Locke’s pass to a wide-open Townsend in the end zone.

Pauling (seven catches for 95 yards) was Locke’s favorite target.

Wisconsin was plagued by mistakes in the first half, but trailed by just a touchdown.

Illinois got an early turnover when Locke scrambled out of the pocket, was hit from behind by All-American Jer’Zhan Newton, and fumbled. Miles Scott fell on the ball on the Illinois 46.

That launched a six-play, 54-yard drive that began with a 27-yard pass from Altmyer to Pat Bryant and ended with a 1-yard TD pass from Altmyer to a wide-open Tanner Arkin in the end zone. It was Arkin’s first career catch.

Wisconsin botched an opportunity to score in the second quarter when Gavin Myers dropped the snap on a 27-yard field goal attempt by Vakos and Illinois recovered on the Wisconsin 18.

The Illini took advantage of the miscue, cashing in with a 12-play, 82-yard touchdown drive that took 7:53. It was the longest TD drive of the season for Illinois in both time of possession and yardage.

Altmyer’s 17-yard run to the Wisconsin 4 on a fourth-and-two play set up a 3-yard TD pass from Altmyer to Tip Reiman, who wrestled the ball away from Alexander Smith at the goal line.

Wisconsin’s offense suddenly came to life late in the first half. The Badgers went 73 yards on eight plays and scored on a 4-yard run by Allen, who ran untouched into the end zone with 31 seconds left.

The Badgers play host next Saturday to No. 3 Ohio State.

Ripon College 12, Lake Forest 6,  The Red Hawks improve to 3-4 overall and 3-3 in the conference.

UW-Lacrosse 31, UW-Oshkosh 28-The Titans fall to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in conference play.

On Saturday, the Ripon boys and girls cross country teams were on of 15 teams competing in the Portage Sectional Meet.

The Tigers close out their season strong with great showings from all the athletes

In the ALCS Sunday Texas won at Houston over the Astros 9-3 to even the series at 3 games each.  Game seven is tonight.

In the NLCS Arizona is at Philadelphia later this afternoon. The Phillies lead 3-2.

In one of the most thrilling NASCAR Cup Series Playoff races of the season, Joe Gibbs Racing driver Christopher Bell rallied from a frustrating race start to lead the final 16 laps of Sunday’s 4EVER 400 presented by Mobil 1 at Homestead-Miami Speedway to earn a second straight appearance in the Championship 4.

Bell, who only made his first appearance inside the top five with less than 50 laps remaining, got around a pair of the day’s front-runners in the final laps to blaze to the lead in the No. 20 JGR Toyota and claim that automatic championship admission ticket. It’s the 28-year-old Oklahoma native’s second win of the season — sixth of his career — and the first of the season’s eight playoff races to date.

In NASCAR Sunday Christopher Bell won at Homestead Miami Raceway. Ryan Blaney finished second, followed by Tyler Reddick, William Byron and A.J. Allmendinger to round out the top five.

Pete Ladd, one of the unlikely heroes when the Milwaukee Brewers advanced to the 1982 World Series, has died after a brief battle with cancer, the team confirmed Saturday night.  Ladd was 67 years old.

He died Friday after suffering from cancer, according to a report from television station WMTW in Ladd’s hometown of Portland, Maine.

Ladd, who up until that point had spent the majority of his baseball career in the minors, was thrust into the Brewers closer’s role in 1982 when Hall of Famer Rollie Fingers suffered an arm injury.

Ladd was flawless in the American League Championship Series against the California Angels. In three games pitched, Ladd pitched 3 ⅓ perfect innings with five strikeouts and earned two saves, including the one that sent the Brewers to their only World Series.
