RIPON — Award-winning poet Jessica Q. Stark will read from her work at Ripon College Wednesday, Oct. 11, as part of the Ripon College Visiting Writers Series and the Schang Family Visiting Writer Fund.
The presentation will begin at 7:30 p.m. in room 147 of C.J. Rodman Center for the Arts. It is free and open to the public. Books will be available for purchase and author signing.
Stark is an assistant professor in creative writing (poetry) in the English department at the University of North Florida. She is a California native and a Vietnamese-American poet, editor and educator.
Her first poetry chapbook, “The Liminal Parade,” was selected by Dorothea Lasky for the Double Take Grand Prize in 2016. Other chapbooks include “Render” (Eat Poem Series, 2022) and “Innanet” (The Offending Adam, 2021).
Her first full-length poetry collection, “Savage Pageant” (Birds LLC, 2020), was a finalist for Poetry Society of America’s Norma Farber Prize, the Cleveland State University Poetry Center Book Prize, the 42 Miles Press Book Prize, and the Rose Metal Press Hybrid Book Prize. It was named one of the “Best Books of 2020” in The Boston Globe and Hyperallergic.
Her second full-length poetry manuscript, “Buffalo Girl” (BOA Editions, 2023), was a finalist for the Noemi Book Prize and the Cleveland State University Center Book Prize.
In addition, Stark is a poetry editor for the literary magazine AGNI, her poetry appears in numerous literary publications, and she has published scholarly articles on poetry, visual media and material culture.
Stark holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Berkeley, and dual master’s degrees in English literature and cultural studies from Saint Louis University’s Madrid campus. She received her Ph.D. in English from Duke University.
She has lived in several cities across the world, including Seoul, South Korea, Madrid, Spain, and for a short time in Zihuatanejo, Mexico, where she ran a backpackers’ hostel with her partner. She is a cat lover, an arts organizer and a level two Reiki practitioner.
