MAN SENTENCED FOR ARSON MURDER FOR HIRE AND MUTULATING A CORPSE

A 25-year-old man convicted of setting a house fire on County Highway P in Waupaca County in April of last year rather than reporting a man’s death and later trying to hire someone to kill witnesses was sentenced Wednesday to 25 years in prison and nine years of extended supervision. Steven Eggert was sentenced in Waupaca County court. In addition to one count of soliciting first degree intentional homicide Eggert had been convicted of arson, mutilating a corpse and other charges. According to a criminal complaint during an investigation in May of 2022 multiple inmates at the Waupaca County Jail were interviewed about Eggert’s attempts to hire someone to kill witnesses in the arson case. In that case Eggert found 62-year-old Kevin Roeglin dead in the home but didn’t report it thinking he would be blamed for Roeglin’s death. He was also worried that if a search warrant was issued weapons he was not supposed to have because he is a felon would be found. Before sentencing Eggert apologized says he made the wrong choices.

ENVISION CONTRIBUTION REDUCED

One of the expenditures the City of Ripon is reducing in the 2024 City Budget is its annual donation to the Envision Greater Fond du Lac program. City Administrator Adam Sonntag told the Common Council during a budget workshop this week that with the City starting its own Community Development Authority it has to consider investing in that effort instead. The City will be investing $16,000 in the CDA. He also informed the Council that the City of Fond du Lac itself is drastically scaling back on what it gives to Envision. Alderperson Ellen Sorensen also mentioned that over the years Envision has distanced itself from small retailers. There also has been a lack of reporting from Envision on how what they do benefits the City of Ripon. The $13,000 contribution Ripon had been giving Envision will be reduced to $2,000 for 2024.

UNITED WAY VOLUNTEERS MOBILE MEALS

One of the efforts the Fond du Lac County United Way supports is volunteerism. Specifically they backed the creation of the Fondy Volunteers.org website when the Volunteer Center of Fond du Lac County folded in the middle of the last decade. United Way Executive Director Amber Kilawee herself is a volunteer for the mobile meals program delivering meals once a week. She finds it rewarding, but there is a need for volunteers for the program. Jason Blonigen is a Volunteer Coordinator for SSM Health Greater Fond du Lac overseeing that effort for Ripon Community Hospital and Waupun Memorial Hospital. He says they are very flexible about the hours that their volunteers work delivering meals. If you would like to know more about those opportunities call him at 920-745-3670. To sign up for the meals call either hospital in Ripon or Waupun.
