RIPON COMMON COUNCIL DISCUSSES POWERED POOL COVERS
After some discussion the Ripon Common Council this week postponed taking action on amending a city ordinance regarding safety requirements for private pools. The current ordinance requires a fence around the pool and a pool cover. Above ground pools with ladders must have the ladder removed when not in use. Recently the City’s Zoning Board of Appeals issued a variance for a pool with a powered cover that locks when the pool is not in use. They requested that the city ordinance be amended to allow that as an acceptable safety alternative. City Administrator Adam Sonntag says the City of Waupun allows that alternative. City Alderman David Gallops wanted more information and City Attorney Lud Wurtz also wanted to look into some standards. Mayor Ted Grant also asked city staff to provide information on what other cities are requiring. Further discussion and action on the proposed amendment to the ordinance were postponed until the Council’s next meeting.
GROUNDBREAKING FOR WAUPUN SENIOR/COMMUNITY CENTER
Officials in Waupun held a groundbreaking Tuesday for a new senior/ community center. The lion’s share of the money for the project, $4.9 million, came through a grant from the state funded by federal American Rescue Plan Act monies. Waupun Mayor Rohn Bishop says that still leaves about $700,000 they will raise through a capital campaign. The first big donation for that, more than $100,000, was announced at the groundbreaking and came from Mike Harmsen of Werner-Harmsen Funeral Home and Furniture. During the groundbreaking former Waupun Mayor Julie Nickel said for her and the people it will serve, the center is a dream come true. Current Waupun Mayor Rohn Bishop says the center will be home to a community center, senior center, and Reach Waupun. It will be just over 22,000-square-feet with a multipurpose gathering place, gym, kitchen, media center, and fitness center. The new center will be completed next year.
