BREWERS STADIUM FUNDING PROPOSAL UNVEILED
Republican state legislators yesterday announced a bill that would devote more than $614 million in public funding to repair and renovate the Milwaukee Brewers stadium. The proposal calls for the state giving the team $60.8 million next fiscal year and up to $20 million each year after that through 2045-46. The city of Milwaukee would be asked to contribute a total of $202 million and Milwaukee County would kick in $135 million by 2050. The team would contribute about $100 million and extend its lease at American Family Field through 2050. In a statement Senator Dan Feyen of Fond du Lac and State Representative Rob Brooks of Saukville say under their bill, the state will contribute $386.5 million solely for the improvement, repair, or maintenance of American Family Field. An additional $25 million will be invested for the winterization of the stadium, allowing for expanded use of the stadium during the winter months. The state funding will come directly from the income tax generated within the stadium district. State Assembly Speaker Robin Vos says, “It is cheaper for the taxpayers to keep the Milwaukee Brewers than to risk them leaving.” (Senator Feyen photo, Senator Feyen far right in the photo).
COVID ORIGINS INVESTIGATION
U.S. Senator Ron Johnson says it is likely the COVID-19 virus originated from a lab in Wuhan. China. Johnson a Standing member of the Senate’s Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations joined his Senate colleagues in sending a letter to CIA Director William Burns requesting information on the recent whistleblower allegations related to the CIA’s investigation into the origins of COVID-19. The federal lawmaker from Oshkosh says recent whistleblower testimony made by a senior-level CIA Officer contends that the Agency paid off six analysts that determined COVID-19 likely originated from a lab leak in Wuhan. Johnson says Congress and the Senate have the right to oversight on agencies and branches of the federal government, but over the decades that threat and the power to enforce it have waned. The letter had requested the information Senators were seeking by next Monday.
EARLY SUCCESS FOR WHAT 3 WORDS
Fond du Lac County’s new way of finding 911 callers via GPS “what3words” has already seen a few success stories. Communications and Emergency Management Director Amy Haase says the app translates GPS coordinates from degrees, minutes and seconds or decimal degrees longitude and latitude to three words for a 3 meter by 3 meter map grid. Haase says it is more precise and significantly reduces the chances of getting the wrong location to first responders via their radio or mobile device. She says in late August they used what3words to find an elderly man in a cornfield and an injured paraglider in another cornfield. Haase says anyone can download the app for their phone.
