Freddy Peralta struck out 13 to match his career high and allowed just one hit over seven innings in the Milwaukee Brewers’ 12-1 blowout of the Colorado Rockies on Monday night.
Milwaukee’s Sal Frelick went 2 for 3 with a three-run homer, scored three times and had four RBIs. Brice Turang and Tyrone Taylor also went deep. William Contreras went 3 for 5, scored twice and had three RBIs.
Peralta (8-8) gave up a homer to Ezequiel Tovar with one out in the first inning, but he wouldn’t let anyone else get on base. Peralta retired each of the last 20 batters he faced.
This marked the second time in his last three starts that Peralta has recorded 13 strikeouts. He also did it in a 3-0 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on July 26. Peralta allowed only one hit and didn’t walk a single batter in each of those games.
Peralta’s other 13-strikeout performance came in his major league debut on May 13, 2018. Peralta led the Brewers to a 7-3 Mother’s Day victory that afternoon with his mother in the stands.
Colorado’s Peter Lambert was just as effective as Peralta early on.
Lambert (2-3) was a strike away from exiting the fourth inning with a 1-0 lead and a no-hit bid intact until everything fell apart for him. The Brewers collected five straight two-out hits to pull ahead 5-1, knocking Lambert out of the game in the process.
Milwaukee grabbed a 2-1 edge with its first hit of the game, as Turang sent a 1-2 sweeper over the right-field wall. Turang’s homer also scored Frelick, who had drawn a leadoff walk.
Brian Anderson followed with a triple off the center-field wall and scored on Taylor’s single up the middle. Christian Yelich delivered a bloop hit to shallow left field that put runners on third and second.
Contreras then greeted Jake Bird with a single up the middle that brought home Taylor and Yelich to extend Milwaukee’s lead to 5-1.
The Brewers added three runs in the seventh and four more in the eighth against Rockies reliever Connor Seabold.
Contreras and Frelick had run-scoring doubles and Andruw Monasterio added an RBI single in the seventh. Taylor hit a solo shot and Frelick added a three-run homer in the eighth.
LHP Kyle Freeland (4-12, 4.88 ERA) pitches for the Rockies and LHP Wade Miley (8-2, 3.01) starts for the Brewers when this three-game series continues Tuesday night. First pitch is at 7:10.

Elsewhere in the NL Central on Monday the Reds downed the Marlins 5-2, the Pirates slipped past the Braves 7-6, and the Mets pounded the Cubs 11-2. The Cardinals had the day off. The Brewers lead the Reds by 1 ½ games in the division and the Cubs are 2 ½ out.
It’s been 15 years since the Milwaukee Brewers ended their postseason drought — and made one of their most memorable trade deadline deals — and the team plans to celebrate this month.
Former pitcher CC Sabathia is set to make an appearance at American Family Field Aug. 25. He will throw out the ceremonial first pitch before the Brewers’ game against the San Diego Padres.
Sabathia was a key member of the first Brewers team since 1982 to reach the postseason. In 17 starts with the Brewers in 2008, Sabathia went 11-2 with a 1.65 ERA and 128 strikeouts. He also recorded three shutouts.
In the final game of the season, with the Brewers needing a win to clinch a wild card berth, Sabathia pitched a complete game, allowing one run, as the Brewers beat the Chicago Cubs 3-1.
Before the Aug. 25, game, the Brewers are giving away posters commemorating a front-page newspaper photo of Sabathia’s celebration following the 2008 postseason clincher.
There were no games in the Midwest League Monday. Tonight the Timber Rattlers host Dayton with the first pitch at 6:40.

The Dock Spiders fell to 28-39 on the season, 15-17 in the second half. The Dock Spiders will be back at Herr-Baker Field on Tuesday night as they take on the Wausau Woodchucks. First pitch is at 6:35.
The Packers activated outside linebacker Rashan Gary from the Physically Unable to Perform list. He tore his ACL on November 6th back in Detroit, but is now he’s back on the practice field.
The team took it easy Monday, more of a walk-through practice. Gary participated in individual drills, no team drills, but he’s just happy to be back and at it.
“It’s a complete honor, a privilege to be back on the field, Gary said. “My circle, my family, everybody knows what I’ve been putting into this. I told them this means a lot. I’m just happy and excited to be back out there with them.
Gary has put in the work, rehabbing and doing everything he could to get back on the gridiron as soon as possible.
There’s still no word if he’ll be able to play in the preseason or when he’ll be able to play in the regular season.
Meanwhile, Eric Stokes remains the only player still on that PUP list. He is also taking it day by day.
This Packers squad will be on their way to Cincinnati Tuesday, with their first joint practice on the road in Cincy Wednesday. Then they play their first preseason game against the Bengals on Friday.
The Green Bay Packers signed RB Nate McCrary. General Manager Brian Gutekunst announced the transaction on Monday.
McCrary (6-0, 213), a first-year player out of Saginaw Valley State, originally signed with the Baltimore Ravens as an undrafted free agent in 2021. He spent his rookie season on the Denver Broncos’ active roster and on the Baltimore Ravens’ practice squad. McCrary was elevated to the active roster for one game by the Ravens in 2021 as a COVID replacement and recorded a carry. He was released by Baltimore following the 2022 training camp and spent part of last season on the Carolina Panthers’ practice squad. McCrary spent this past offseason and the early part of training camp with the Cleveland Browns. He will wear No. 46 for the Packers.
