7/29/23 Plane Crashes into Lake Winnebago

Update 7/30/23:
Winnebago County Sheriff’s officials say a man and a woman killed in a plane crash in Lake Winnebago Saturday morning were not local residents. It is believed the man was in his 20s and the woman in her 30s. One body was recovered Saturday afternoon. The position of the wreckage was making it difficult for divers to recover the second body. The US Coast Guard says the plane was a T-6 Texan aircraft. They went on to say in a social media post that the plane was “rapidly maneuvering before rapidly descending from about 3,000 feet altitude.” Sheriff officials expressed their condolences to the families impacted by the tragedy.”

Winnebago County Sheriff’s officials say their communications center began getting 911 calls shortly after 9 am this morning about an airplane that had crashed into Lake Winnebago. Two people were on board the plane and recovery efforts for the occupants and the plane are ongoing. The Sheriff’s Office is asking people to avoid the area of Asylum Bay Boat Launch. Helping in the search are Winnebago County Marine Units with Dive Rescue/Recovery Team members, along with the Oshkosh Fire Department. Winneconne Fire Department, Neenah Menasha Fire Rescue, Calumet County Sheriff’s Office, the DNR, US Coast Guard, and the US Coast Guard Auxiliary all responded to the scene. The Sheriff’s Office is also working closely with EAA, the NTSB, and the FAA.
