FDL WOMAN SENTENCED TO PROBATION FOR DRUNKEN DRIVING INJURY CRASH
The 54-year-old Fond du Lac woman who was drunk when she hit a man walking his scooter across a street in Fond du Lac last September has been sentenced to five years of probation. Last month Terri Huettl pled no contest to an injury by intoxicated use of a vehicle charge. Last week Fond du Lac County Judge Douglas Edelstein imposed and stayed a 30 month prison term and three years of extended supervision opting instead for probation for Huettl. According to the criminal complaint when Huettl’s truck struck the 18-year-old Fond du Lac man on September 2nd he hit her windshield and flew into the air. Medical staff who treated him told police he suffered a fractured skull, traumatic brain injury, broken clavicle, and severe internal bleeding. A partial portable breathalyzer test administered at the county jail put Huettl’s blood alcohol concentration at nearly 2 ½ times the legal limit.
ALL HANDS ON DECK DURING DRUG DEATH INVESTIGATION
Ripon Police Chief Bill Wallner says when it came to investigating the drug overdose death of an 18-year-old Ripon man left on a city sidewalk it was “all hands on deck” for his department. He says given the size of his department just about everyone had a role in the investigation. He says some of that work involved following up on suspect and witness interviews, correspondence and interviews with the medical examiner’s office, outside agencies assisted with digital downloads on cell phones, and more. He notes because it is a small community some officers also may have had prior contacts with the five suspects charged in relation with the death. Chief Wallner says his officers also felt invested in the case because they are members of the community. He says his officers make his job as a chief easy to do because of how good they are at their jobs.

FAIRWATER POLICING
Fond du Lac County Executive Sam Kaufman says the Village of Fairwater is working out how or if it wants to continue to provide policing services for the village. Earlier this month Kaufman spoke to the village board as he continued his tour of county municipalities to update them on the county. Prior to speaking to the board there was a public hearing about the policing issue. He says quite a few people were there and the topic of discussion was about having an officer dedicated there for a period of hours within the Fairwater jurisdiction. Currently the county provides a deputy 20 hours a week in the Village of Brandon and could do the same for the Village of Fairwater. Kaufman says that’s a decision the village has to make whether it involves contracting with the County Sheriff’s Office, going to a constable system, or doing nothing. He says if they choose to do nothing the Sheriff’s Office would still provide patrols in the area.

UPRIVER STURGEON SPEARING TAG APPLICATIONS
The DNR reminds sturgeon spearers wishing to apply for an Upriver Lakes spearing tag for the 2024 sturgeon spearing season to submit their applications by August 1st. Spearers wishing to spear on the Upriver Lakes are required to apply for a tag due to the higher harvest rate associated with the Upriver Lakes. A total of 500 applicants will receive a tag to spear a sturgeon from lakes Poygan, Winneconne and Butte des Morts during the 2024 sturgeon spearing season. These spearing tags will be issued through a drawing where priority is given to applications with the most preference points. Spearers can also choose to purchase a preference point for future applications in lieu of applying for a tag this year. If an applicant is selected to purchase an Upriver Lakes sturgeon spearing license, they will be notified by October 1st. Any license holder not selected during this drawing will be awarded a preference point towards future drawings. Spearers can apply for an Upriver Lakes tag or purchase a preference point online through the Go Wild system or at any license sales location.
