Corbin Burnes is having a great July and it’s helped the Milwaukee Brewers get back on top in the Central Division of the National League.
Burnes allowed two hits and struck out 10 in eight innings Thursday as the Brewers concluded their six-game road trip with a 4-0 win over the Philadelphia Phillies.
Christian Yelich hit a three-run homer off Philadelphia starter Taijuan Walker in the third inning that would give Burnes the cushion he would need. Yelich finished 3-for-4, finishing a triple short of his fourth career cycle.
Milwaukee went 5-1 on the trip through Cincinnati and Philadelphia- two teams that were hot heading into the All-Star Break. The Brewers began the unofficial second half of the season one-half game behind the Reds for the lead in the division and now lead them by 2 1/2 games.
After struggling through June with a 1-1 record and a 4.99 ERA in five starts, Burnes has reverted to the form that saw him win the 2021 National League Cy Young Award. He is 4-0 for the month with a 1.33 ERA and has allowed eight hits combined while striking out 36.
The Phillies lineup didn’t get a runner to second base until Nick Castellanos advanced on a Bryce Harper groundout with one out in the seventh. Burnes stayed in the strike zone, throwing 70 strikes out of 100 pitches while leaving Philadelphia hitters often off-balance with his cut fastball and curveball.
Andruw Monasterio had two hits for the Brewers while William Contreras singled in an insurance run in the seventh inning.
Yelich has had an RBI in the last five games for the Brewers and recorded his ninth three-hit game of the season. He was aggressive early in the count, especially on the belt-high splitter that he launched into the right-center bleachers.
Walker (11-4) went six innings, allowing six hits and four runs in his first loss since June 1 against the New York Mets. Castellanos and Bryson Stott were the only two Phillies to get a hit.
Milwaukee returns home on Friday night, beginning a three-game series against Atlanta. RHP Freddy Peralta (6-7, 4.41 ERA) will take the mound against Braves RHP Mike Soroka (1-1, 5.40). First pitch is at 7:10.
In other games in the NL Central the Reds beat the Giants 5-1 and the Cardinals downed the Cubs 7-2. The Brewers still lead the Reds by 2 ½ games in the division.
In the Midwest League Thursday the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers pounded Dayton 11-2 to up their record to 38-47. They play again tonight at Dayton with the first pitch at 6:05.
In Northwood’s League action the Fond du Lac Dock Spiders shutout the Lakeshore Chinooks 3-0. The Dock Spiders improve to 22-31 on the season, 9-9 in the second half.
The Dock Spiders will be back in action tonight at Kapco Park as they take on the Chinooks. First pitch is at 6:35 P.M. The Dock Spiders will be back at home on Saturday night as they take on the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters with the first pitch slated for 6:35.
The Green Bay Packers will enter training camp with all 13 of their 2023 draft picks signed. Jayden Reed was the final rookie to sign his contract.
Reed caught 55 passes for 636 yards and scored five touchdowns for Michigan State last season. The previous season, Reed had 59 catches for 1,026 yards and scored 10 TDs.
In addition to his pass-catching prowess, Reed scored three touchdowns on punt returns during his college career.
The Washington Commanders no longer belong to Dan Snyder. NFL owners voting during a special session Thursday unanimously approved the team’s sale from the Snyder family to a group led by Josh Harris.
The Harris group is paying $6.05 billion, a record sum for a North American sports franchise. Snyder had owned the majority of the Commanders since 1999, and his family became the sole owners after he bought out his limited partners two years ago.
Meanwhile The NFL fined former Washngton Commanders owner Dan Snyder $60 million after an independent investigation concluded he sexually harassed a team employee and that the team withheld revenue from the NFL.
Attorney Mary Jo White, who led the investigation, informed the league’s owners of her findings during a special session Thursday. The news of her findings broke at the same time it was announced that the owners had unanimously approved the sale of the Commanders to Josh Harris for $6.05 billion. The fine against Snyder represents 1% of the sale price.
In her findings, White cited Snyder’s lack of cooperation, apart from a one-hour interview he did with investigators on June 29, about 17 months after her investigation began.
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said the league was satisfied with the outcome.
Brian Harmon shot 5-under 67 to take the first round lead in the Open at Royal Liverpool Golf Club. He leads Christo Lamprecht and Tommy Fleetwood by one shot. Jordan Spieth shot 69 and Scottie Scheffler 70. Rory McIlroy is five shots behind after shooting an even-par 71.
