The Milwaukee Brewers opened a two-game lead over Cincinnati in the NL Central, overcoming a two-run deficit to beat the Reds for the fifth time in a six-game stretch, a 4-3 victory Sunday behind rookie Andruw Monasterio’s tiebreaking single in a two-run eighth inning.
After taking two of three at home on the weekend before the All-Star break, the Brewers swept three games at the Reds. Milwaukee has a two-game lead for the first time since before play on May 25.
Christian Yelich hit his 13th home run in the third and cut Milwaukee’s deficit to 3-2 with an RBI single in the fifth.
Jake Fraley hit a two-run homer for Cincinnati, which had been shut out in its previous three games.
With the Reds leading 3-2, Willy Adams walked against Lucas Sims (3-2) starting the eighth and took third on Jesse Winker’s single. Owen Miller hit a sacrifice fly, All-Star closer Alexis Díaz relieved and Raimel Tapia flied out.
Monasterio hit an opposite-field blooper that fell in front of Fraley in right as pinch runner Tyrone Taylor slid home ahead of a throw that was up the first-base line.
Hoby Milner (1-0) allowed one hit in two scoreless innings, and Devin Williams needed just nine pitches in a perfect ninth for his 23rd save in 25 chances.
Joey Votto ended Cincinnati’s 28-inning scoreless streak with an RBI double in the second. Yelich homered in the third off Ben Lively, who was visited by athletic trainers during the fourth and replaced by Derek Law starting the fifth.
Fraley put the Reds in front 3-1 with a two-run homer off Adrian Houser in the the third. Houser allowed six hits in 5 2/3 innings.
The Brewers are off Monday. RHP Julio Teheran (2-3, 3.64) starts Tuesday’s series opener at Philadelphia and RHP Aaron Nola (8-6, 4.39).
On the injury report for the Brewers, 1B Rowdy Tellez underwent surgery to have 17 stitches and repair a small fracture in his left ring finger after getting it stuck in the padding of the center field wall while shagging fly balls during warmups on Saturday. He will be out another four weeks. Tellez has been on the injured list since July 5 with right forearm inflammation. A;sp. 3B Brian Anderson placed on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to Thursday, with a lower back strain. INF Jahmai Jones was recalled from Triple-A Nashville.
Elsewhere in the NL Central Sunday the Giants beat the Pirates 8-4, the Cardinals downed the Natioanls 8-4 and the Cubs lost to the Red Sox 11-5. The Brewers lead the Reds by 2 games, the Cubs are 8 games out, the Pirates 10 ½ and the Cardinals are 11 ½ games behind.
In the Midwest League Sunday the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers lost at Peoria 13-8 to drop to 33-37 on the season. There are no games today in the Midwest League.
The Dock Spiders snapped their two-game losing skid on Sunday afternoon as they bested the Chinooks 8-4. The Dock Spiders got the bats going early on as they scored four runs in the bottom of the first, capped off by a three-run home run from catcher Lorenzo Rios (Presbyterian), his first of the season, which gave the Dock Spiders a 4-0 lead.
Dock Spiders starter Amar Tsengeg (Texas-Dallas) received the win, his second of the season. The Dock Spiders improved to 19-30 on the season, 6-8 in the second half. The Dock Spiders will be back in action tonight at Warner Park as they take on the Madison Mallards. First pitch is slated for 6:05 PM.
Steve Stricker won his third PGA Tour Champions major of the year, capping off a dominant weekend at Firestone with a 4-under 66 on Sunday for a three-shot victory in the Kaulig Companies Championship.
Stricker was five shots off the lead after a second-round 73 but closed with rounds of 65-66 for an 11-under 269 total. David Toms shot a final-round 65 to finish alone in second at 8 under.
The 56-year-old Stricker won the Regions Tradition in May and then triumphed two weeks later at the Senior PGA Championship. He has five victories this year on the over-50 tour and a lead of more than $2 million over second-place Bernhard Langer on the Charles Schwab Cup money list. The win at Firestone gives Stricker a spot in next year’s Players Championship, which he said was one of his goals. This event was previously known as the Senior Players Championship before Kaulig Companies took over as the title sponsor.
Stricker played his first 13 holes in 3 under before his only bogey of the day on the par-4 14th. But he responded with a lenghty put for a birdie on the par-4 15th and a wedge to 2 feet for a birdie on the par-5 16th, giving himself enough of a cushion to enjoy his walk to the 18th green.
Stricker has six career majors on the PGA Tour Champions. His best finish in a major before turning 50 was a runner-up at the 1998 PGA Championship.
The final major of the year for the seniors will be the Senior British Open at Royal Porthcawl in Wales in two weeks.
Rory McIlroy birdied the finals two holes to win the Scottish Open Sunday by one stroke over Robert McIntyre. McIlroy shot two-under in the final round to finish 15-under to edge the Scottsman, who shot 6-under on the final 18 holes.
The day after making a hole-in-one, Steph Curry made yet another memorable shot, followed by yet another wild celebration.
On Sunday, the Golden State Warriors star sunk a long eagle putt on the 18th hole to win the 2023 American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament at Lake Tahoe in Nevada.
With the putt Curry overtook retired tennis pro Marty Fish for the victory and ignited the crowed.
The eagle putt came a day after Curry made a hole-in-one on the seventh hole at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course.
He won the 54-hole tournament with 75 points while Fish finished with 73 in the Modified Stableford scoring system, which awarded points and deducted points for performance on each hole.
The hole-in-one earned Curry eight points and the eagle earned him six points as Curry became the first active athlete to win the ACC since the NFL’s Al Del Greco in 2000.
Joe Pavelski finished third with 66 points, three-time champion Mark Mulder was fourth with 59 and Aaron Rodgers finished fifth with 56. Rodgers, now the New York Jets quarterback, had his best finish at Edgewood. He had four birdies on the back nine Sunday.
A poor start left Car;ps Alcaraz a single point from a two-set hole against Novak Djokovic in the Wimbeldon final. But the 20-year old Spaniard, in his second major final, came back to win in five sets 1-6, 7-6 (6), 6-1, 3-6, 6-4.
The 36-year old Djokovic was seeking a fifth consecutive championship, and record-tying eighth overall. point, 25 minute masterpiece, then winning the third set 6-1, before dropping the fourth set 3-6, and then winning the fifth set 6-4 in an engaging, back-and-forth final on Sunday. Alcaraz claimed his first title at Wimbledon and second Grand Slam trophy overall.
The North team capped off a weekend sweep of the South with a 49-7 victory in the WFCA Large School All-Star Game on Saturday evening at Titan Stadium in Oshkosh.
The Wisconsin Glo completely overwhelmed the Milwaukee Buckettes 138-37 Saturday night at the Oshkosh Arena to improve to 6-2 in league play and 7-2 overall. The Glo is off this weekend before playing at St. Louis on July 29th.
The NASCAR Cup Series race originally scheduled for Sunday was postponed because of rain forecast throughout the day in Loudon, New Hampshire. The Crayon 301 was rescheduled for noon today (EDT).
Joe Gibbs Racing’s Christopher Bell will lead the field to the green flag after winning the Busch Light Pole Award on Saturday. Teammate Martin Truex Jr. will join him on the front row.
With seven races left in the regular season, Hendrick Motorsports’ William Byron leads the standings by 21 points over Truex. Richard Childress Racing’s Kyle Busch is third, followed by Bell and Trackhouse Racing’s Ross Chastain to round out the top five.
