From Wayne Mausser

The New York Yankees’ Gerrit Cole will start Tuesday night’s All-Star Game for the American League and Arizona’s Zac Gallen will open on the mound for the NL.

AL manager Dusty Baker of Houston and NL manager Rob Thomson of Philadelphia announced their starting lineups on Monday before the annual Home Run Derby.

Cole will start for the first time in his sixth All-Star nod. He is 9-2 with a 2.85 ERA and 123 strikeouts in 117 innings. The 32-year-old right-hander joins Lefty Gomez (five times), Red Ruffing (twice), Hank Borowy, Spud Chandler, Roger Clemens, Whitey Ford, Jimmy Key, Vic Raschi, Met Stottlemyre, Bob Turley and David Wells as Yankees All-Star starters.

Gallen, a 27-year-old right-hander, is 11-3 with a 3.04 ERA, tied for the major league lead in wins. The first-time All-Star has 125 strikeouts in 118 1/3 innings and becomes the third Diamondbacks pitcher to start an All-Star Game after Randy Johnson in 2000 and ’01 and Curt Schilling in 2002.

Yankees and Diamondbacks are All-Star starting pitchers for the time since Clemens and Johnson in the 2001 game at Seattle.

Baker said Sunday that Cole wouldn’t pitch in the All-Star Game because he would be going on two days’ rest after throwing 103 pitches in a 9-2 win over the Chicago Cubs in New York on Saturday.

Tonight’s All-Star Game is in Seattle.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. made history in more ways than one by winning the 2023 T-Mobile Home Run Derby title. Randy Arozarena pushed him to the limit in a highly impressive runner-up performance.

The eight contestants on Monday night combined for a whopping 341 home runs, smashing the previous record of 312 set in 2019.  Vlad Jr. joined his Hall of Fame father, Vlad Sr., as a Home Run Derby champion, which makes them the only father-son duo to both win Home Run Derby titles. The older Guerrero won the 2007 Derby in San Francisco as a member of the Angels, when his son was eight years old.

Guerrero set a record for the most home runs in a final round of the Home Run Derby with his 25. That surpassed the 23 home runs Pete Alonso hit in the final round of each of his Derby championships in 2019 and 2021

Because of  the All-Saar break there are no games in the Midwest League until Friday.  The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (34-45)are back in action Friday night at Peoria with the first pitch set for 6:30.

In Northwood’s League action Monday night the Fond du Lac Dock Spiders lost to the Rockford Rivetts, 16-10.  The Dock Spiders were down 13-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning before starting a comeback that fell short.

The Dock Spiders drop to 15-27 on the season and 2-5 in the second half. The Dock Spiders will be back at home on Tuesday night for game two of the Rockford series at Herr-Baker field..  First pitch is at 6:35.

The Milwaukee Brewers have set a date for former pitcher Ben Sheets’ induction into the team’s Walk of Fame.

Sheets will be immortalized with a home plate-shaped granite stone outside American Family Field on Aug. 26. Sheets is also set to throw out the ceremonial first pitch before that evening’s game against the San Diego Padres.

Sheets, a four-time all-star, played for the Brewers from 2001-08. He ranks second in Brewers history with 1,206 strikeouts, third with 221 starts, fifth with 1,428 innings pitched, sixth with 94 wins and ninth with a 3.72 ERA. Sheets set the Brewers franchise record with 18 strikeouts against the Atlanta Braves on May 14, 2004. Sheets will become the 22nd member of the Walk of Fame.

Wisconsin has reinstated linebacker Jordan Turner less than two weeks after suspending him for a violation of the athletic department’s student-athlete discipline policy.

Athletic director Chris McIntosh announced Turner’s reinstatement Monday, which followed an internal inquiry by a committee of university staff.

Wisconsin hasn’t offered additional details or specifics on the reasons behind Turner’s suspension, noting federal law prohibits it from disclosing information regarding disciplinary actions toward a student. After his suspension was announced on June 30, Turner said via Twitter that he had been cited with an OWI first offense along with additional traffic violations.

OWI under Wisconsin law can be defined as operating while intoxicated or operating while impaired, depending on the circumstances of the situation.

Turner had 68 tackles during the Badgers’ 7-6 season last year to rank behind only fellow linebacker Maema Njongmeta. He was the defensive most valuable player of Wisconsin’s 24-17 Guaranteed Rate Bowl victory over Oklahoma State.

A walk-in job fair is planned for Tuesday, July 11, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Lambeau Field. The organization has a number of seasonal jobs available, including game day security and guest services and part-time jobs in the Packers Pro Shop.

Applicants must be at least 16 years old to work in security or guest services.

Applicants for the game day jobs must be available for every Packers home game and any potential playoff games and other events at Lambeau Field.

The Packers are looking for people with strong verbal communication and conversation skills, an ability to stay focused on job responsibilities and solve problems, and can stand for an entire shift.

The job fair is in the U.S. Cellular Loft. You should park in Lot 3 on the east side of the stadium (along Oneida Street, but there’s an entrance on Lombardi Ave.) Enter through the American Family Insurance Gate and take the elevator or escalator to the main level. Guest services staff will direct you to the U.S. Cellular Loft on the third floor. You can also apply online on the Packers website.

More job fairs are planned on July 18, July 25, August 1, and August 29. Those job fairs are at Johnsonville Tailgate Village, and the hours are the same, 4 to 6 p.m.

Northwestern has fired coach Pat Fitzgerald amid a hazing scandal that called into question his leadership of the program and damaged the university’s reputation after it mishandled its response to the allegations.

Fitzgerald’s dismissal on Monday completed a rapid fall from grace for the former Northwestern linebacker. The 48-year-old Fitzgerald had been firmly entrenched at his alma mater, an annual fixture on any list of college coaches with the most job security.

“The head coach is ultimately responsible for the culture of his team,” Northwestern President Michael Schill said in an open letter. “The hazing we investigated was widespread and clearly not a secret within the program, providing Coach Fitzgerald with the opportunity to learn what was happening. Either way, the culture in Northwestern Football, while incredible in some ways, was broken in others.”

Fitzgerald began a two-week suspension on Friday after the school said an investigation by a law firm did not find “sufficient” evidence that the coaching staff knew about ongoing hazing — though there were “significant opportunities” to find out about it.

The Daily Northwestern then published on Saturday detailing allegations from a former player who described specific instances of hazing and sexual abuse. The report also indicated that Fitzgerald “may have known that hazing took place.” That led Schill to write an open letter to the university community in which he acknowledged focusing “too much on what the report concluded (Fitzgerald) didn’t know and not enough on what he should have known.” Schill went on to say that he planned to speak with university leadership, members of the board of trustees and leaders of the faculty senate to determine his next steps.

Schill was the president of the University of Oregon before taking over Northwestern in September. He also teaches at Northwestern’s law school.
