Wade Miley pitched six strong innings and the Milwaukee Brewers made a first-inning run stand up in a 1-0 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday.

The victory pulled the Brewers to within a game of the NL Central-leading Reds heading into the All-Star break. Milwaukee took two of three in the series.

A trio of Brewers relievers – Elvis Peguero, Joel Payamps and Devin Williams – combined to complete the shutout. Williams retired the side in order in the ninth to earn his 20th save in 22 tries.

Christian Yelich led off the Brewers half of the first with a ground-rule double off Ben Lively (4-5) to extend his hitting streak to nine consecutive games. Yelich scored on Jess Winker’s two-out single to center. The Brewers scored in the first inning in all three games in the series.

After giving up a lead-off double to Kevin Newman in the first, Miley (6-2) retired nine consecutive batters before Matt McLain doubled to start the fourth. Miley then struck out the next three batters to get out of the inning. Miley walked three batters in the fifth but, aided by a double play, didn’t allow a run. The Reds threatened again off Miley in the sixth after consecutive singles by Jonathan India and Elly De La Cruz, but again failed to score.

Miley gave up four hits and tied a season high with eight strikeouts.

Lively, making his first appearance since June 20 after a stint on the injured list with a right pectoral muscle strain, retired 13 of 14 batters at one point. He gave up four hits and one run in 5 2/3 innings while walking two and striking out five.

The Reds and Brewers meet in Cincinnati for a three-game series beginning Friday, following the All-Star break.

Elsewhere in the NL Central Sunday the Cubs beat the Yankees 7-4, the Cardinals edged the White Sox 4-3 and the Pirates downed the Diamondbacks 4-2. The Brewers trail the Reds by a game, while the Cubs are 7 out, the Pirates 8 ½ and the Cardinals are 11 ½ games back.

The MLB Draft began Sunday night where the Brewers selected third baseman Brock Wilken from Wake Forest at No. 18 overall. For the fourth straight year, Milwaukee has selected a college hitter in the first round.

Wilken is 6 foot 4, 225 pounds and hit 31 home runs this season, helping Wake Forest reach the College World Series.

At No. 33, Milwaukee took right handed pitcher Josh Knoth from Pachogue-Medford High School in New York. He’s not even 18 years old yet, but he is an Ole Miss commit.

In the second round at No. 54 overall, the Brewers took another third baseman, Mike Boeve from Nebraska Omaha.

In the Midwest League Sunday the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers won at home over Beloit 6-3, to up their record to 34-45.  There are no games scheduled for the league today.

Green Bay Rockers pinch-hitter  Jayson Jones (Arkansas) hit a walk-off homer over the right field wall to give the Rockers a 10-9 victory over the Fond du Lac Dock Spiders Sunday.

The Dock Spiders drop to 15-26 on the season and 2-4 in the second half. The Dock Spiders will return home on Monday night when they start a two-game series with the Rockford Rivets. Game two of the Rockford series is on Tuesday night at Herr-Baker field.  First pitch is at 6:35.

On the Men’s PGA Tour Sunday Sepp Straka won the 2023 John Deere Classic.  Straka had a chance at a 59 but finished with a double bogey on 18, to finish at -9 under 63.  Brendon Todd (68) and Alex Smalley (67) finished T-2 at 19 under with Ludvig Aberg (63) and Adam Schenk (68) T-4 at 18 under. Allisen Corpuz turned a tight duel with Nasa Hataoka into a runaway, closing with a 3-under 69 on Sunday for a three-shot victory to become the first American in 20 years to make the U.S. Women’s Open her first LPGA title.

She won by three shots over Charley Hull (66) and Jiyai Shin (68) and claimed the $2 million prize, the richest ever for an LPGA major champion.

Corpuz, who finished at 9-under 279, was the only player to break par all four days.
