Joey Wiemer hit a go-ahead, two-run homer to straightaway centerfield in the sixth inning, lifting the Milwaukee Brewers to a 2-1 victory on Monday night that dropped the struggling New York Mets a season-worst eight games under .500.
Wiemer’s 422-drive off Drew Smith (3-3) hit off the black fence surrounding the Mets’ celebratory home run apple and rolled about 50 feet away from centerfielder Brandon Nimmo.
Despite a major league record $355 million payroll on opening day, New York (35-43) has lost seven of nine and is 6-15 since completing a three-game sweep of Philadelphia on June 1 — the Mets’ most recent series win. They trail NL East-leading Atlanta by 16 games and are eight games under .500 for the first time since ending the 2021 season at 77-85.
Colin Rea (4-4) retired his first eight batters and allowed one run in 6 1/3 innings. Hoby Milner (four outs), Elvis Peguero (one) and Devon Williams (three) completed a three-hitter. Williams got his 14th save in 15 chances as the Brewers retired the final 11 Mets in order.
Milwaukee (41-37) began the night a half-game behind first-place Cincinnati in the NL Central. The Brewers stranded eight runners before Wiemer’s homer and left 11 on base, two shy of their season-high.
Smith (3-3), made his first appearance after a 10-game suspension for a banned sticky substance on his hand prior to entering against the Yankees on June 13.
Mets starter Justin Verlander gave up five hits and struck out five in five scoreless but laborious innings. Verlander, who threw 100 pitches, was assessed a pitch clock violation starting the third inning after throwing a warmup pitch with 27 seconds left on the clock.
Francisco Lindor hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth. The Mets are planning to recall LHP David Peterson (1-6, 8.08 ERA) to make a spot start Tuesday. Peterson is 1-1 with a 4.50 ERA in six starts for Triple-A Syracuse since being demoted on May 16. Brewers RHP Julio Teheran (2-2, 1.53 ERA) has given up just 23 hits over 35 1/3 innings in his first six starts for Milwaukee. First pitch is at 6:10.
Elsewhere in the NL Central on Monday there was only one game as the Orioles pounded the Reds 10-3. The Brewers regained first place in the division and lead the Reds by a half-game. The Cubs are 3 out, the Pirates 5 ½ behind and the Cardinals are 8 ½ games out of first place.
Three players representing the Milwaukee Brewers will take part in the 2023 Futures Game: OF Jackson Chourio, RHP Jacob Misiorowski, and C Jeferson Quero.
The game will be played on Saturday, July 8th at 6 PM at T-Mobile Park in Seattle.
Milwaukee joins Boston as the only teams with three players selected. The Brewers will have three representatives in the Futures Game for a second straight season and for the third time in the last six games.
Chourio was joined by fellow outfielder Joey Wiemer and left-handed pitcher Antoine Kelly in the 2022 game, while outfielders Corey Ray and Lewis Brinson and infielder Mauricio Dubón represented the Brewers in 2017.
Chourio is ranked as Milwaukee’s No. 1 prospect and the No. 3 overall prospect in baseball by MLB Pipeline. Quero and Misiorowski are ranked No. 3 and No. 4 in the Brewers system and check in at No. 79 and No. 93 in MLB Pipeline’s list of top 100 prospects, respectively.
The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers are off for a second straight day. The only game in the Midwest League today is Dayton at West Michigan.
In the Northwood’s League Monday the Fond du Lac Dock Spiders dropped their fifth straight game, losing a heartbreaker to the Green Bay Rockers, 4-3. The Dock Spiders return home tonight for another matchup with the Rockers as it’s scout night at Herr-Baker Field. Give your troop an experience they will never forget! Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts are invited to participate in a pre-game parade around the warning track and are encouraged to wear their vest, uniform, and bring a troop banner. Markus Allen, a former Wisconsin wide receiver now in the transfer portal, won’t have to face charges in connection with his April 29 arrest as long as he meets the terms of a deferred prosecution agreement.
Dane County district attorney Ismael Ozanne said Monday that “the case will not be issued” if Allen completes the terms of what Ozanne referred to as a “pre-charge referral.”
Allen was one of over 40 people arrested at an Aoruk 28th block party. He has since announced he is entering the transfer portal and no longer is included in the 2023 roster on Wisconsin’s website.
LSU went from its low point of the season to the ultimate high in a span of 24 hours.
A day after it gave up the most runs ever in a Men’s College World Series game, , LSU cranked up its offense and won its first national title since 2009 with an 18-4 victory over Florida on Monday night in the third and deciding game of the finals.
LSU (54-17) staved off elimination three times in bracket play and bounced back from the humiliating 24-4 loss in Game 2 to claim its seventh championship, second in Division I history to USC’s 12.
Edmonton Oilers center Connor McDavie swept the top individual honors at the NHL Awards on Monday to cap his career-best season. McDavid won the Hart Trophy as the league’s most valuable player and the Ted Lindsay Award as the NHL Players’ Association’s most outstanding player. It was McDavid’s third Hart Trophy win, after having been nominated five times. Boston Bruins star David Pastrnak finished second for MVP, while the Florida Panthers Matthew Tkachuk was third. McDavid earned 195 first-place votes for the Hart Trophy, with Pastrnak getting the only other first-place vote.
