Owen Miller hit a tiebreaking double in the 10th inning against his former team and the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Cleveland Guardians 5-4 on Sunday.
Miller’s one-out double against Trevor Stephan (3-3) hit high off the left-field wall and scored automatic runner Joey Wiemer from second base. Miller, acquired by Milwaukee from Cleveland in December for cach, dived headfirst into second base and pointed to the Brewers’ dugout in celebration.
Devin Williams (4-1) pitched the ninth for the Brewers. Elvis Peguero recorded his first save, striking out José Ramírez and Josh Naylor before hitting Andrés Giménez with a pitch. But he retired Myles Straw on a foul popup to end it.
The game remained tied at 4 in the eighth after an unusual sequence in the bottom of the inning. Tyler Freeman’s slow roller eluded second baseman Andruw Monasterio for a single to start the inning. Straw appeared to steal second with one out as Gabriel Arias swung and missed, making the count 3-2.
Milwaukee manager Craig Counsell came on the field and talked with plate umpire Lance Barksdale, which led to a meeting of the umpire crew. It was ruled Arias’ swing interfered with Victor Caratini’s throw to second base. Straw was sent back to first base.
Guardians manager Terry Francona talked with Barksdale, and the inning ended when Arias struck out and Straw was thrown out at second on another steal attempt
Corbin Burnes made his first appearance in Cleveland since throwing eight innings in a combined no-hitter with Josh Hader on Sept. 11, 2021. Burnes took a perfect game into the eighth and struck out 14 in that outing.
Burnes took a 4-1 lead into the sixth Sunday, but didn’t get out of the inning. A double by Giménez scored Ramírez. Tyler Freeman drew a walk and Burnes’ wild pitch scored Giménez. Freeman took third and scored when Will Brennan’s single fell in front of left fielder Blake Perkins.
Burnes was pulled after rookie Bo Naylor singled for his second hit of the game. Left-hander Hoby Milner retired Steven Kwan to end the inning. Burnes allowed four runs in 5 2/3 innings.
Aaron Civale allowed four runs in six innings for Cleveland.
Christian Yelich and Miller had run-scoring doubles. Rowdy Tellez had an RBI single in the third. Brewers RHP Colin Rea (3-4, 4.88 ERA) will start the opener against the Mets at Citi Field on Monday night. First pitch is at 6:10.
Elsewhere in the NL Central Sunday the Cardinals beat the Cubs 7-5 to wind up their weekend series in London, the Braves nipped the Reds 7-6 and the Marlins shutout the Pirates 2-0. The Brewers trail the Reds by a half-game in the division, while the Cubs are 3 games out the Pirates 5 ½ and the Cardinals are 8 ½ behind.
In the Midwest League Sunday the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers beat Lansing at home 12-4. There are no games scheduled for Monday.
The Dock Spiders dropped their fourth straight game to the Lakeshore Chinooks at home on Sunday afternoon. The Dock Spiders will be back in action tonight in Green Bay as they take on the Rockers. First pitch is set for 6:35 P.M.
They will return home on Tuesday night for another matchup with the Rockers as it’s scout night at Herr-Baker Field. Give your troop an experience they will never forget! Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts are invited to participate in a pre-game parade around the warning track and are encouraged to wear their vest, uniform, and bring a troop banner. Scout night packages include a one-of-a-kind Dock Spiders patch, along with Spider Bucks to spend at the ballpark during the game.
Despite a shaky finish, which he said came from the nerves of wanting so badly to win, 37-year-old Keegan Bradley broke the tournament record at the Travelers Championship on Sunday for his sixth PGA tour victory.
Bradley closed with a 2-under 68 to finish 3 shots ahead of Zac Blairr, who shot 62, and Brian Harman, who closed with a 64.
Bradley, who went 62-63-64 in the first three rounds, finished at 23-under 257 at TPC River Highlands, a shot better than Kenny Perry‘s previous record from 2009. Bradley takes home $3.6 million from an elevated $20 million purse, as the tournament became one of 17 designated events on tour this season, attracting a world-class field, including world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm. Bradley’s earnings this season have topped $8.5 million.
Blair had his best finish on tour. The 32-year-old from Utah has been playing on a major medical exemption after missing almost two full years with a torn labrum.
China’s Ruoning Yin won the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship Sunday, shooting a final round 67. The 20-year old Yin had five birdies in the final round and finished -8 under for the tournament.
Yuka Saso of Japan fired a 66 and came up one shot short, finishing in sole second at 7-under while Northern Ireland’s Stephanie Meadow, Megan Khang, Xiyu Lin of China, Anna Nordqvist of Sweden and Spain’s Carlota Ciganda finished tied for third.
Rose Zhang, making her major championship debut as a professional, finished in a tie for sixth.
Yin’s win at Baltusrol makes two for her on the year, as she won for the first time on the LPGA at the 2023 Dio Implant Open in Los Angeles. Her victory makes her the second woman from China to win a major championship, following Shanshan Fang who also captured the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship in 2012.
Ross Chastain capped off a “perfect” race weekend, hitting all the right notes in the Music City to earn the winner‘s guitar trophy in Sunday‘s Ally 400 at Nashville Superspeedway — his first NASCAR Cup Series race victory of the season, a day after claiming his first career pole position.
Chastain had to hold off Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Martin Truex Jr. and Denny Hamlin by 0.789 seconds for the win — leading a race-best 99 of the 300 laps, including the final 34. Chase Elliott, the 2022 Nashville winner, finished fourth, followed by his Hendrick Motorsports teammates Kyle Larson and Byron. Joe Gibbs Racing‘s Christopher Bell, Legacy Motor Club‘s Erik Jones, Richard Childress Racing‘s Kyle Busch and Kaulig Racing‘s A.J. Allmendinger — who won the Nashville NASCAR Xfinity Series race on Saturday — rounded out the top 10.
The NASCAR Cup Series next heads to downtown Chicago for the highly-anticipated Grant Park 200 Chicago Street Race next Sunday.
