BARNS DESTROYED BY FIRE ON FARM SET TO HOST ANNUAL BREAKFAST
Fire destroyed barns and an office at W2133 Randellen Lane in Fond du Lac County’s Town of Forest Sunday morning. Just before 10 am Sheriff’s deputies, and Mt. Calvary Fire Department and First Responders were dispatched to the address. The barn was fully engulfed. A property owner noticed the fire while doing work around the outside of the property. One of the owners got approximately 100 cows out of the barn. The structure contained four separate barns and an office building that were all connected and was a complete loss. Portions of the barns contained hay, wood shavings, and miscellaneous tools. No one was injured. The fire is believed to be caused by an electrical issue but remains under investigation. Kurt and Sarah Loehr own the farm. Seventeen additional fire departments responded to the scene. The farm was supposed to host Fond du Lac County’s Breakfast on the Farm this Sunday.
KEWASKUM WOMAN HURT IN MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT
Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s officials say a 57-year-old Kewaskum woman was injured when her motorcycle struck a deer on County Highway F near County Highway W last night. About 7 pm a caller reported the accident in the Town of Eden to the County’s Communication Center. Deputies and Campbellsport Fire and Ambulance responded to the scene. The woman had suffered serious injuries. She was flown to ThedaCare Regional Medical Center in Neenah. Investigators say she was traveling east on County Highway F making her way through the curves approaching County Highway W when a deer ran into the roadway. She collided with it and fell from her bike. Two other motorcyclists traveling with her were able to avoid the deer. She was wearing a helmet and neither speed nor alcohol appears to be contributing factors in the crash.
TWO INJURED ONE KILLED IN CALUMET COUNTY TRAFFIC CRASH
Calumet County Sheriff’s officials report a 37-year-old Brillion man was killed when his pickup truck hit an SUV at the intersection of County Highway KK and County Highway D in the Town of Woodville Saturday afternoon. A 73-year-old Appleton man was heading east on County Highway KK and stopped at the stop sign. He pulled out into the path of the pickup truck which was heading north on County Highway D, where there is no stop sign. The Brillion man died at the scene. The Appleton man was flown to a hospital where he is in critical condition. His passenger, a 73-year-old Appleton woman, was taken to a local hospital and is in fair condition. The accident happened around 3:30 Saturday afternoon.
PLANE CRASH VICTIMS IDENTIFIED
Both people killed in a single-engine plane crash in a Watertown city park Wednesday morning have been identified. Seventy-three-year-old William Buccholz, a retired dentist, was flying the aircraft from Watertown Municipal Airport bound for Manitowish Waters when it crashed in Brandt Quirk Park a few miles away. His eight-year-old grandson was also on board. The National Transportation Safety Board says the aircraft was a Mooney M20R. It took off about 9 am. The Federal Aviation Administration and NTSB are leading the investigation with the Watertown Police Department assisting. Brandt Quirk Park remained closed throughout the weekend.
SEYMOUR MAN REPORTS TO JAIL DRUNK
Columbia County Sheriff’s officials say a 28-year-old Seymour man who turned himself in at the jail Thursday to serve time on drug charges apparently drove to the jail while he was drunk. Aaronn Allison had been released from the Shawano County Jail earlier in the day and was to report directly to the Columbia County Jail to serve time for a November 2022 drug arrest. When he got to the jail he exhibited signs he was impaired. It was determined he had driven to jail while he was impaired. Allison faces new charges for his third OWI, felony bail jumping, and violation of probation. (Columbia County Sheriff’s photo).
ADDITIONAL FUNDING FOR BOYS AND GIRLS CLUBS
Last Thursday the Joint Committee on Finance voted in favor of a budget motion championed by State Representative Alex Dallman which makes a major improvement of $5 million in new spending for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Wisconsin. There are currently 28 agencies around Wisconsin which help operate approximately 200 clubs located across approximately 74 cities. The $5 million of new spending will be specifically allocated for the “Be Great: Graduate” program. The program has been a proven success throughout not only Wisconsin, but across the nation, by supporting students throughout their schooling to be able to graduate on time with a plan to be “college-, community-, or career-ready after graduation.” The budget motion, which is now part of Wisconsin’s 2-year budget bill, will now move to a full vote of the legislature and onto the governor. Dallman says, “The 41st District is lucky to have two Boys and Girls Clubs with the Tri-County Area Club in Berlin and the brand new Columbia County/Portage Club in Portage.” He says the clubs make lasting impacts on hundreds of youth each year.
PLEA AND SENTENCING HEARING SCHEDULED FOR RIPON ARSON SUSPECT
A plea and sentencing hearing have been scheduled for the 68-year-old Ripon man accused of setting a fire at a home he lived at last December. David Schultz was being evicted from the home and told a police officer at the scene that he was sick of “being pestered” by the three other people who lived at 217 Washington Street. The fire caused damage throughout the second floor of the home. During the blaze Schultz had to be rescued from a stairwell and another person from a second story window. Two dogs were also rescued from the residence. According to the criminal complaint he used a lighter to set fire to a pile of magazines in the middle of his room. During the hearing on September 6th if Schultz pleads guilty to the charges he’s facing he could be sentenced, but if he maintains his innocence a jury trial will be scheduled.
LIBRARY BOARD REPRESENTATION
Following action by the Fond du Lac County Board last week the county will have representation on the Brandon Public Library’s Board. County Executive Sam Kaufman says every year the county budgets money for the library system and Waupun and Brandon receive some of that money but the county had no representation on those library boards. He says they needed to amend their county board rules to allow representation on those boards, which the board also took care of last week. Kaufman points out Waupun came to them first with a request and they followed that up with the resolution for Brandon last week. Kaufman says he will now be able to make appoints to those library boards with the county board’s approval.
SPRING TURKEY HUNTING RESULTS ANNOUNCED
The state’s Department of Natural Resources recently announced preliminary totals for the 2023 spring turkey season. Wisconsin turkey hunters registered 42,439 birds this season, a 7 percent increase from the five-year average. The 2023 spring season started on April 15th with the two-day youth hunt for hunters under 16-years-old. A total of 2,972 birds were registered, a 28 percent increase from the five-year average. The regular season was divided into six separate one-week periods from April 19th to May 30th. The separate periods help maximize hunter opportunities while minimizing interference for a more sustainable harvest. A total of 246,428 authorizations were available this spring, and hunters applied for 223,503 of them. The deadline to apply for next spring’s turkey season is December 10th.
CELEBRATE WAUPUN
Waupun’s Tanner Park will be a hub of activity this weekend for the 11th Annual Celebrate Waupun. Nick Rusch is the president of Waupun Festivals. He says the event evolved over the years from a 4 ½ day festival to its current form of 3 days. The event is this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. There will be a carnival, food, music, a cornhole tournament, tour of the city’s sculptures, fireworks, and more. Rusch says they even lined up a Wild World of Animals Show featuring exotic and fun animals that will be in the park all three days. They will be doing 3 shows a day. Rusch say a megaband wristband will be available at the Piggly Wiggly store in Waupun through noon Thursday for $50 that will allow you unlimited access at the carnival; otherwise it will be $75 when things start Friday. He also says tickets for Friday’s fish fry are available in advance at Fox Valley Savings Bank. A complete list of activities is available at the Waupun Festivals website.
