SSM Health Greater Fond du Lac is giving $10,000 to the Boys & Girls Club of the Tri-County Area to help support four robust community programs – Operation Backpack, Coats for Kids, Thanksgiving Meals, and Adopt a Family.
The organization’s mission is to improve the lives of children and families. The team offers programs that encompass areas like building life skills, homework help, engaging in STEM or computer science learning opportunities, and taking part in physical activities.
“The Boys & Girls Club of the Tri-County Area provides basic needs to the youth and their families including school supplies, meals, clothing, hygiene bags, and so much more,” according to Ashley Bartol, director of Development. “By providing these services, it’s not only lessening the burden of the families by enabling them to reallocate their own funds into other areas like utility/medical bills and groceries, but we are also lessening the financial burden of many counties who are limited in funding to provide adequate services to area families.”
According to the US Census Bureau’s latest report, while the national poverty rate is 12.6 percent, poverty among children (those under 18) is 16.9%. One in five youth live below the poverty line and over 11 million students in the US are living in households where they are unsure when they might get their next meal.
“The impact on children facing financial disparities is particularly devastating, hindering their physical and mental health, delaying their development and putting them at greater risk of chronic illnesses like asthma and anemia,” according to Nicole Gill, vice president, Patient Care Services & CNO, SSM Health Waupun Memorial Hospital/SSM Health Ripon Community Hospital. “This is why we are so invested in helping to eliminate hunger and other barriers to good health for our patients and everyone within the communities we serve.”

SSM Health Greater Fond du Lac’s community benefit ministry totaled more than $400,000 across the communities it serves. This investment helps ensure access to health care for patients who are uninsured or underinsured, train the next generation of health professionals to care for those in need, and fund programs to address the most pressing health needs of our communities.
