Thursday Sports

From Wayne Mausser

Abraham Toro hit a two-run home run, Owen Miller had two hits and drove in a pair of runs and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Toronto Blue Jays 4-2 Wednesday night.

Making his first start of the season after being called up from Triple-A on Tuesday, Toro connected off Toronto right-hander Alex Manoah in the second for his first hit with the Brewers, who are 24-10 this season when hitting at least one home run. The Brewers are 5-16 when they don’t homer.

Toro, who is from Quebec, has three home runs in seven career games in Toronto.

Toronto cut the lead in half on Kevin Kiermaier’s RBI triple in the fifth. Miller made it 4-1 with a two-run double off Tim Mayza in the seventh.

Making his second start of the season, Brewers right-hander Julio Teheran (1-1) allowed an unearned run and four hits in six innings.

Teheran pitched in the independent Atlantic League and the Mexican League last season. He won in the majors for the first time since April 2021, when he was with Detroit.  Teheran retired six of the final seven batters he faced.

Joel Payamps gave up Cavan Biggio’s RBI grounder in the seventh and Peter Strzlecki worked a perfect eighth against the top of Toronto’s order. Devin Williams finished for his ninth save in nine chances, snaring Alejandro Kirk’s liner for the final out.

Manoah (1-6) allowed two runs and three hits in four innings in losing his sixth straight decision. The struggling right-hander, an AL Cy Young Award finalist last season, has not won in his last 10 outings.

Brewers pitchers did not walk a batter or strike out a batter. According to the team, , it’s the seventh time in Brewers history that has happened, and the first since July 11, 1992, against Kansas City. Four of the other five instances happened in the 1979 season, while the other was in 1977.

RHP Kevin Gausman (3-3, 3.03) starts for the Blue Jays in Thursday afternoon’s series finale. RHP Freddy Peralta (5-4, 4.64) goes for the Brewers. First pitch is at 12:07.

Elsewhere in the NL Central on Wednesday the Rays edged the Cubs 4-3, the Pirates downed the Giants 9-4 and the Reds over the Red Sox 5-4. The Brewers lead the Pirates by one game, the Reds by 3 and the Cardinals and Cubs by 5 games.

In the Midwest League Wednesday the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers won at home over Peoria 5-2.  Edwin Jimenez (2-1) picked up the win.  The teams play again tonight with the first pitch at 6:40 at Fox Cities Stadium.

In the Northwoods League Wednesday the Fond du Lac Dock Spiders lost their third straight game to start the season, this time at Madison as the Mallards won 9-4. The Dock Spiders will be back in action today as they take on the Madison Mallards at 11:35 AM from Herr Baker Field in Fond du Lac on ESPN+.

The NBA Finals begin tonight at Denver as the Nuggets host the Miami Heat.  The Nuggets beat the Lakers in the Western Conference Finals to advance while the Heat, after blowing a 3-0 lead against the Celtics, came back to win the Eastern Conference Finals on the road Monday night.  It’s Miami’s 2nd appearance in the finals in the last four years.

The exit of four-time MVP Aaron Rodgers has led to some debate among the Green Bay Packers regarding exactly what constitutes a rebuild.

Most Packers insist they’re not rebuilding even as they try to break in new starting quarterback Jordan Love after getting three decades of Hall of Fame-caliber quarterback production from Rodgers and his predecessor, Brett Favre.

Left tackle David Bakhtiari has no problem thinking of it that way.

To me, flat-out, how I look at it it’s disrespectful to say you’re not rebuilding (after replacing) a Hall of Fame quarterback,” Bakhtiari said. “It was disrespectful to say you weren’t rebuilding off of Brett Favre when you moved to Aaron.”

As far as Bakhtiari is concerned, going through a rebuild doesn’t necessarily mean a team will have a losing season. He cited a very recent example.

Meanwhile, the veteran tackle participated only in individual drills on Wednesday, and head coach Matt LaFleur said they’re trying to be “smart” with Bakhtiari during the offseason program.

The Packers went 8-9 last season to miss the playoffs and end a string of three straight NFC North titles. They have since allowed Rodgers and plenty of other veterans to depart while welcoming in a 13-man draft class.
