FDL MAN CHARGED WITH RECKLESS HOMICIDE IN OVERDOSE DEATH

A 46-year-old Fond du Lac man has been charged with first degree reckless homicide as a party to the crime for the overdose death of a Fond du Lac man in December of 2020. Josh Weber has a preliminary hearing today in Fond du Lac County court. During a hearing last week his bond was set at $50,000 cash. According to the criminal complaint he drove the victim down to Milwaukee to purchase drugs from a source Weber knew on Christmas Day of 2020. Weber later told investigators he took the victim there in return for free drugs. He stated he didn’t recall how much heroin they received and that it was probably fentanyl, not heroin. According to the Fond du Lac County Medical Examiner’s Office an autopsy found “Fentanyl toxicity/overdose with evidence of recent cocaine use.”  According to the criminal complaint the victim was a recovering drug addict and had been clean for approximately two months. CAMPBELLSPORT AREA FIRE

Fire destroyed a small shed, golf cart, and caused other damage on Birchwood Drive on the north side of Birchwood Lake Tuesday afternoon. According to Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s reports the Campbellsport Fire Department was dispatched for a golf cart that was on fire inside a shed at W886 Birchwood Drive just before 1:30 pm. When fire crews arrived the blaze had spread from the shed to a minibus made into a camper next to it. It then spread to an unattached garage and another shed behind that. Other fire departments were dispatched to assist. No one was injured during the fire.

WAUPACA COUNTY ARSON SUSPECT BACK IN COURT

The 30-year-old Iola man facing more than 20 criminal charges for allegedly setting fires in northwestern Waupaca County was back in court Tuesday. David Engel-Deford faces seven felony charges and 14 misdemeanor charges for the five fires set on private property and land owned by the DNR. According to the criminal complaint Engel-Deford’s vehicle was spotted near one of the fires. The fires burned about 10 acres. They also destroyed personal forest property and damaged electrical infrastructure. He allegedly told investigators he started the fires with a lighter and a small propane torch.  His initial hearing will continue next Tuesday.

REVENUE SHARING HOPES

State Representative Jon Plumer is hopeful a revenue sharing plan will make it through the State Senate and to the Governor’s desk without too many changes. The state lawmaker from Lodi says it was a bipartisan effort to begin with to share more of the state’s revenues with counties and municipalities who also struggle with budgets and making ends meet without leaning too heavily on taxpayers.  Plumer says the problem is everyone wants their specific piece of the pie which has slowed down the effort to get the plan approved by the state legislature and the governor. Plumer believes some form of the plan will pass and go into effect.

GREEN LAKE COUNTY BOARD MEETING TIME MOVED UP

Green Lake County residents planning to take in county board meetings will be doing that at an earlier time now. During last month’s meeting the Board of Supervisors voted 14 to 3 to move the starting time of county board meetings from 6 pm to 4:30 pm. County Supervisor Luke Dretske was one of the three votes against changing that time. He says board meetings need to be held at a time when the public can attend them, not when it is convenient for county supervisors. He says most of the county board’s supervisors are older and don’t have to worry about meeting times conflicting with jobs and other responsibilities. The next Green Lake County Board meeting is on Tuesday, June 20th at 4:30 pm.

REPRESENTATIVE DALLMAN SUPPORTS MIRROR LAKE DREDGING PROJECT

The state’s Joint Finance Committee recently voted in favor of a budget motion led by State Representative Alex Dallman to assist a revitalization project on Mirror Lake in Lake Delton. Mirror Lake lies within Mirror Lake State Park and is enjoyed by many local residents and by nearly 500,000 visitors each year. The proposed project will remove sediment that has built up over time, forming deltas, which have made the lake nearly unnavigable. The project will also stabilize gullies that have washed out due to significant flooding. The budget motion, which is now part of Wisconsin’s two-year budget bill, will direct the Department of Natural Resources to pay a portion of the $1.3 million project. Representative Dallman is urging residents to contact Governor Evers and urge him to approve the Mirror Lake dredging project in the state budget so that the lake can continue being enjoyed for many years to come.
