From Wayne Mausser

Joey Wiemer and Owen Miller homered, Colin Rea combined on a five-hitter and the Milwaukee Brewers stopped the Houston Astros’ eight-game winning streak with a 6-0 victory on Tuesday night.

Houston second baseman Jose Altuve left in the bottom of the sixth inning because he was feeling ill, according to manager Dusty Baker. The 33-year-old, playing his fourth game of the season after recovering from a broken right thumb, walked off the field with athletic trainers during a pitching change.

Rea (1-3) gave up four hits in 5 1/3 innings, struck out four batters and walked two. Joel Payamps finished the sixth, and Elvis Peguero, Peter Strzelecki and Bryse Wilson pitched an inning each in Milwaukee’s fifth shutout this season.

Houston was blanked for the second time. The other was a 2-0 loss to San Francisco on May 2.

J.P. France (1-1) gave up two runs — one earned — and five hits in 5 2/3 innings with eight strikeouts and one walk.

Wiemer put Milwaukee ahead in the third with a 430-foot solo drive over the left-field bullpen that was the Brewers’ second-longest homer this season.

Miller singled in the fourth and came home when catcher Yainer DIaz’s throw skipped into center for an error.

Brian Anderson hit a two-run double in the eighth off Rafael Montero and Miller followed with his third homer this season

The series concludes this afternoon as the Astros send  RHP Brandon Bielak (1-1, 2.89 ERA) against Brewers RHP Adrian Houser (0-0, 3.07. Houser will make his fourth start of the season. Houser is 1-0 with a 1.42 ERA in one start and one relief appearance against the Astros.  First pitch is at 12:10.

Elsewhere in the NL Central Tuesday the Rangers beat the Pirates 6-1, the Cardinals over the Reds 8-5 and the Cubs beat the Mets 7-2.  The Brewers lead the Pirates by one game in the division with the Cubs four games back and the Cardinals are five games behind.  The Reds are six games off the pace.

The Packers continue their OTA workouts.  On offense Tuesday , David Bakhtiari and Elgton Jenkins were missing in the trenches. On defense, corners Jaire Alexander and Rasul Douglas were absent.  Jordan Love failed on his first 4 pass attempts before finally tossing a touchdown to rookie Jayden Reed. And late in practice, Love dazzled with touchdowns throws to each of last year’s draft picks at the WR position: Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs, and Samori Toure.

“Obviously the first red zone period we had wasn’t great,” Love said. “I think for us to be able to finish like that was a huge step for us.”

“We are just installing our plays,” said head coach Matt LaFleur. “Whatever the defense presents, he has to react. And if it gets out of hand one way or the other, we can adjust. But I think he has done a pretty good job up to this point.”

The defense played well early in practice.  Rashan Gary progressing is working is way back through rehab. Tthe pass rusher working back from the knee injury he sustained at Detroit last year. It was a game that also took Eric Stokes out of the Packers’ lineup as well. He was doing rehab drills as well.

In the NBA Eastern Conference Finals Tuesday night the Celtics broke through at Miami with a 116-99 victory ove the Heat forcing a game-five back in Boston Thursday night.  Jayson Tatum led the Celtics with 33 points.  Miami was led by Jimmy Butler who scored 29.

Aaron Rodgers suffered a minor calf sprain Tuesday that kept him out of the Jets practice. Other than that, the quarterback is having a blast on his new team.

“It’s been like a dream month so far,” said Rodgers, who was traded by the Green Bay Packers on April 24.

Rodgers, who has been participating in voluntary workouts — something he didn’t do in recent years with the Packers — said there are no doubts in his mind that he made the right decision by continuing his career and opting to play for the Jets

“Every day I wake up excited about coming to the facility,” Rodgers said after practice, addressing the media for the first time since his introductory news conference April 26th.

Rodgers, 39, attracted a huge media turnout for the first open practice — the team’s second OTA session. He didn’t participate in any drills. Rodgers said he “tweaked” his right calf during pre-practice conditioning and decided to sit out practice. A “veteran’s day,” he called it.

“I don’t think it’s too serious,” he added.

The injury appeared to happen while he was hopping with a small medicine ball — one of the quirky exercises they do to warm up before practice. Rodgers wouldn’t confirm that, saying only that it occurred while he was running. He noted that it was the first time in his 19-year career that he warmed up in such a weird fashion.

NFL owners voted on Tuesday to approve a resolution that allows players to fair catch on kickoffs with the resulting possession beginning at the team’s own 25-yard line.

The new rule specifies that the fair catch off a free kick (safety or kickoff) must occur behind the team’s 25-yard line in order for the ball to be placed at the 25.

The rule change will be for one year only, with the league citing “player safety” as a reason for its proposal.

“The kickoff play for us has been a play that has had a lot of changes for us over the years, all really driven by health and safety,” Rich McKay, chairman of the NFL’s competition committee, told NFL Network’s Judy Battista. “The concussion rate on the play has gone up. It’s gone up because the ball is being returned more by kicks that are being hung inside the 5-yard line. College made this rule change in maybe 2018 or 2019. We looked at their data and said, you know what, this is the right thing to do now.”

McKay and NFL executive Jeff Miller said Tuesday that their modeling says the kickoff return rate will decrease from 38% to 31% and the concussion rate will drop 15% due to the approved proposal.
