20 May 2023 News

Fond du Lac Police arrested a 31-year-old man who set a two-story multi-family home on fire in the 400 block of East 2nd Street early Friday afternoon during a domestic violence incident. The victim, a 29-year-old woman, was able to make her way safely to a neighboring home. Police learned the suspect had barricaded himself inside the residence the woman escaped from, and he had a can of gasoline. Upstairs’ tenants of the home were evacuated. Contact was made with the suspect by phone, but he was uncooperative. Soon smoke and fire came from the house. The suspect briefly exited the home with a self-inflicted wound to his throat. He reentered the home, which was nearly fully engulfed, but exited again through a side door and was taken into custody. The fire was quickly extinguished. The suspect was taken to St. Agnes Hospital with significant injuries. He will be charged and taken to the Fond du Lac County Jail when he is medically cleared. A Police Community Service Officer suffered smoke inhalation while assisting in blocking off the street and was also taken to the hospital. (Fond du Lac Fire and Rescue photo).
