From Wayne Mausser

Matthew Liberatore tossed five shutout innings in his season debut and Paul DeJong homered to lead the St. Louis Cardinals to a 3-0 win over the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday night.  St. Louis has won eight of 10 after a 10-24 start to the season.

Milwaukee has dropped two of three following a three-game winning streak.

Nolan Arenado added a run-scoring hit for St. Louis, which remains in last place in the NL Central for the 22nd successive day after winning the division last season.

Liberatore (1-0), a 23-year-old left-hander, gave up three hits in a 95-pitch stint. He struck out six and left after giving up a leadoff walk to Willy Adames to start the sixth.

Liberatore was recalled Tuesday from Triple-A Memphis. He was making his first big league appearance since Oct. 5, 2022, at Pittsburgh.

Relievers Andre Pallante, Giovanny Gallegos and Ryan Helsley combined to nail down the seven-hit shutout. Helsley recorded the final four outs for his fifth save in eight chances.

Corbin Burnes (4-3) gave up three runs on eight hits over six innings in the loss.

DeJong hit a two-run homer off Burnes with two out in the sixth to push the lead to 3-0.

Arenado, who had homered in his previous five games, drove in the first run of the game with a single off the glove of third baseman Brian Anderson in the first.

Milwaukee outfielder Owen Miller extended his hitting streak to 10 games with three hits. Miller has reached base safely in a career-best 19 straight games.

Brewers outfielder Tyrone Taylor hit what was first called a home run with two out in the fourth. The ball hit the top of the wall and bounced back into play. The call was reversed by a crew chief review and Taylor had a double.

After an off-day Thursday, Brewers RHP Adrian Houser (0-0, 5.19) will open a three-game series at Tampa Bay on Friday. He is making his third start after beginning the season on the injured list with a right groin strain.

Elsewhere in the NL Central Wednesday the Pirates shutout the Tigers 8-0, the Rockies beat the Reds 11-6 and the Astros nipped the Cubs 7-6.  The Brewers lead the Pirates by a game in the division.

The NBA’s Eastern Conference finals got underway last night and the visiting Miami Heat beat the Boston Celtics 123-116. For the third time in these playoffs, the Miami Heat have won Game 1 on the road, coming back from a 13-point deficit to steal home-court advantage.  Jimmy Butler led the way once again, scoring 35 points, grabbed  five rebounds, had seven assists and six steals.  Game two is Friday night in Boston.

Tonight it’s game two of the Western Conference in Denver where the Nuggets lead that series 1-0. Denver won game one Tuesday night 132-126.

The Milwaukee Bucks conducted an interview for the franchise’s head-coaching opening with University of Houston coach Kelvin Sampson, sources told ESPN.

Sampson, the first known high-profile college coach to meet with Milwaukee about the vacancy, spent six seasons in the NBA as an assistant coach — including three with the Bucks — before returning to college basketball in 2014 and constructing a national championship contender at Houston.

Sampson is 232-74 (.758) in his nine seasons at Houston, including four consecutive berths in the Sweet 16 and a trip to the Final Four in 2021. His Cougars were ranked No. 1 in the nation for much of the 2022-23 season.

Sampson is 657-301 (.686) in his college career across stops at Houston, Indiana, Oklahoma and Washington State.  Sampson’s teams are typically well-regarded for their tenacious defensive play and efficient offensive production. Houston is moving to the Big 12 from the American Athletic Conference next season.

Sampson has history and a relationship with Bucks general manager Jon Horst, who was a member of the front office when Sampson worked on Scott Skiles’ coaching staff between 2008 and 2011.

The Bucks are searching for a replacement for Mike Budenholzer, who was dismissed after five seasons as the franchise’s coach. So far, Milwaukee has conducted a vast search that includes several assistants such as Milwaukee’s Charles Lee, Golden State’s Kenny Atkinson, Portland’s  Scott Brooks, Toronto’s ‘s Adrian Griffin, Miami’s ‘s Chris Quinn, Phoenix’s ‘s Kevin Young and former Charlotte Hornets coach James Borrego, sources told ESPN.

The Packers signed TE Tucker Kraft and P Daniel Whelan, claimed C DJ Scaife off waivers from the Miami Dolphins and released CB Benjie Franklin.

Kraft (6-5, 259) was picked by Green Bay in the third round (No. 78 overall) of the NFL Draft out of South Dakota State.

Whelan, a first-year player out of the University of California, Davis, played for the D.C. Defenders in 2023, earning All-XFL honors after ranking No. 3 in the league in both punting average (45.6) and punts inside the 20 (11).

Scaife (6-3, 321), a rookie out of Miami (Fla.), signed with the Dolphins as an undrafted free agent on May 12. He appeared in 61 games with 52 starts (32 at right tackle, 20 at right guard) during his five seasons (2018-22) with the Hurricanes.

Franklin spent the first six weeks of the 2022 season on Green Bay’s practice squad and then re-signed with the Packers on Jan. 10, 2023.

In golf, the PGA Championship gets underway today at Oak Hills Country Club in Rochester, New York. This will mark the year’s second major championship as Jon Rahm won the Master’s Tournament in April.  Last year’s winner was Justin Thomas who won in a playoff over Will Zalatoris.
