Nolan Arenado homered for the fifth straight game for the St. Louis Cardinals in a 3-2 loss to Milwaukee on Tuesday night, with Joey Wiemer and Brian Anderson homering for the Brewers.
Milwaukee starter Wade Miley came out with a left lat strain in the second inning after throwing 22 pitches. Miley pitched in just nine games last season when he was with the Chicago Cubs and endured shoulder and elbow injuries.
St. Louis starter Jordan Montgomery (2-6) pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on eight hits with a walk and seven strikeouts. He is 0-6 in seven starts since winning at Milwaukee on April 8.
Joel Payamps (2-0), the fourth of six pitchers, got the victory with 1 2/3 innings of work. Devin Williams pitched the final 1 2/3 innings for his sixth save.
Arenado led off the second with the homer, hitting Miley’s fastball into the left-field seats to it. Arenado had not homered in five straight games since a career-best six-game streak from Sept. 1-5, 2015.
Arenado has 999 RBIs in 1,424 games and could join Hall of Famers Eddie Mathews and Chipper Jones as the only players since 1920 who were primarily third basemen to hit 300 homers with 1,000 RBIs before 1,500 games.
The Brewers went up 3-2 when Anderson led off the sixth with a homer.
Milwaukee took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI ground-run double by Willy Adames to score Owen Miller.
An RBI single by Brendan Donovan in the fourth gave St. Louis a 2-1 lead.
The Brewers got the run back in the fifth on a one-out solo homer by Wiemer. Milwaukee then loaded the bases on two singles, one on an overturned call at first base, and walk but Montgomery escaped the jam.
Tonight the Brewers send Corbin Burnes (4-2, 3.35) to the mound against Adam Wainwright (0-0, 7:20 ERA. First pitch is at 6:45.
Elsewhere in the NL Central Tuesday the Tigers shutout the Pirates 4-0, the Astros beat the Cubs 7-3 and the Reds downed the Rockies 3-1. The Brewers lead the Pirates by two games in the division with the Cubs five games back.
In the first game of the NBA Western Conference Finals last night the Nuggets won at home over the Lakers 132-126. Nikola Jokic had a triple-double for Denver, scoring 34 points, grabbing 21 rebounds and dishing out 14 assists.
In the first game of the Eastern Conference Finals tonight Miami is at Boston.
Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator Joe Barry realizes he must raise his game to get the most out of a defense that didn’t live up to expectations last year.
“It starts with me,” Barry said Tuesday. “I have to do better. In order for this group to play better, I have to do better.”
Green Bay probably will have to lean more on the unit this year as the offense adapts to life without four-time MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers That means a repeat of 2022 won’t be good enough.
The Packers’ defense features eight players they drafted in the first round, including this year’s selection of Iowa edge rusher Lukas Van Ness with the 13th overall pick.
Last season the Packers went 8-9 and missed the playoffs to end a string of three straight NFC North titles.
The only defenses that allowed more yards per play than the Packers (5.8) were the Detroit Lions, Chicago Bears, Los Angeles Chargers and Minnesota Vikings. The only teams that allowed more yards per carry than Green Bay (5.0) were the Houston Texans, the Lions, the New York Giants and Chargers.
Green Bay also ranked 17th in yards allowed per game (336.5) and tied for 17th in points allowed per game (21.8). Packers head coach Matt LaFleur still opted to bring back Barry for a third season rather than shaking up the defensive staff.
The Packers played better on defense late in the year. After forcing a total of 12 turnovers during a 4-8 start, they had 12 during a four-game winning streak that put them back into playoff contention.
The Packers also must determine who will start alongside Savage at safety. The Packers’ signing of forme Houston Texans safety Jonathan Owens last week makes it increasingly likely they won’t bring back free agent Adrian Amos, a team captain last season.
