From Wayne Mausser

Wade Miley went 10 up, 10 down to begin his showdown with Clayton Kershaw before the Dodgers hit back-to-back home runs on the way to roughing up Miley and beating the Brewers 8-1 at American Family Field.

The loss continued a steady slide for the Brewers, who have lost five of their last six series after winning five of the first six. They were 14-5 after the first three weeks of the regular season. Three weeks later, they are 20-17.

Kershaw had a lot to do with cooling the Brewers down in the series rubber game, allowing his lone run on William Contreras ‘ fourth-inning homer.  Kershaw cruised, holding the Brewers to five hits and no walks with eight strikeouts and 18 swings and misses. He’s 5-2 with a 1.98 ERA in 11 games (10 starts) in Milwaukee during his career, including postseason appearances.

Miley was knocked around during the middle innings by a Dodgers lineup that entered the day hitting .197 against left-handed pitching. For the first three innings of the Miley-Kershaw matchup, it was advantage, Miley. He retired the first nine Dodgers he faced on 41 pitches with three strikeouts and nothing even close to a hit.

But after Mookie Betts grounded out to open the fourth, the Dodgers started hitting. Freddie Freeman and Will Smith each hit solo home runs in a span of three pitches, and the Dodgers tacked on two more runs in the fifth inning after Miley issued a pair of walks to the bottom of L.A.’s batting order. Los Angeles added four more in the sixth off Miley and Milwaukee reliever Colin Rea.

Miley was charged with seven runs on six hits in five-plus innings. He surrendered three home runs, exceeding what he had allowed in his first six starts combined. The seven runs exceeded what he’d allowed in his last four outings.

Miley finished the month of April with a 1.86 ERA, but it’s up to 3.60 after his first two starts of May.

The Brewers are off today and begin a series with the Royals Friday night at American Family Field.

Elsewhere in the NL Central Wednesday the Rockies nipped the Pirates 4-3, the Mets shaded the Reds 2-1 and the Cubs bombed the Cardinals 10-4.  The Brewers remain a half-game behind the Pirates in the division and the Cubs moved to within 2 ½ games of first place.

In the Midwest League Wednesday the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers lost at home to South Bend 10-6.  The two teams play again tonight with the first pitch at 6:40.

In the NBA Playoffs Wednesday night the Pistons won at home over the Heat 112-103 but Miami still leads 3-2.  Golden State beat the Lakers 121-106 but Los Angeles still leads 3-2 in their series.

Tonight Boston is at Philadelphia with the 76ers up 3-2 at Denver plays at Phoenix with the Nuggets leading that series 3-2.

Bucks star Giannis Antetkounmpo was unanimously selected as a member of the All-NBA First Team for the fifth straight year.

Giannis finished fifth in the league in scoring with 31.1 points a game, and tied for second in rebounds while averaging 5.7 assists per game. He’s just the third player in NBA history to average better than 30 points, ten rebounds and five assists per game while knocking down better than half of his shots.

Antetkounmpo also passed the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for the most First Team selections in franchise history. He has also been named to an All-NBA Team, first or second, in seven of his ten seasons in the league.

Rounding out the 2022-23 All-NBA First Team is Luka Dončić, Joel Embiid, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Jayson Tatum.

On Wednesday, Jordan Love finally got to meet the media for his first comments following the Aaron Rodgers trade. Love weathered the ups and downs of uncertainty with his career and feels he can do the same with whatever comes the way this fall.

“It’s not easy in this league,” Love said.. “And I know it’s not going to be easy this year. But, one thing I do, is I tell myself every day that I am good enough. I have really high confidence in myself. One thing I learned in college, my coaches always told me, it’s never as good as you think it is and it’s never as bad as you think it is. Even when it feels like the world is falling down, you are playing so bad, you go back and look at the film. And it’s like, it’s not as bad as you thought it was, or vice versa.”

Love’s excitement for the season is off the charts. But just getting to start this fall is an eventuality he never took for granted.

“It’s hard,” Love said. “When I got drafted here I knew right away what situation I was in, who I was behind. I knew it was going to come with time. I was going to come in and learn and grow. I’ll admit. I think the hardest time was when he re-signed the contract last year. It was like, ok, well where do we go from here? What do I do? Just sat back and thought to myself and came back with a great approach. Like just go ball out, any opportunity I get. Just grow and try be the best version of myself and you can’t control what happens after that.”

The outside world may not have many expectations for the Packers this season. But Love is not buying into that. He thinks this team has a ton of talent and can compete despite the youth movement on the entire roster.
