Friday Sports

From Wayne Mausser

The Milwaukee Bucks have parted ways with head coach Mike Budenholzer, the team said in a statement Thursday.

“The decision to make this change was very difficult,” said Bucks general manager Jon Horst. “Bud helped lead our team for five incredible seasons, to the Bucks’ first title in 50 years, and into an era of sustained success. We are grateful for the culture of winning and leadership that Bud helped create in Milwaukee.

“This is an opportunity for us to refocus and reenergize our efforts as we continue building toward our next championship season.”

Budenholzer is out after 5 years with the team. The Bucks won their first championship in 50 years under Budenholzer in 2021, but often came up short despite stellar regular seasons.

This season marked the third time that Budenholzer’s Bucks achieved the #1 seed in the Eastern Conference. But they failed to advance to the NBA Finals all three times.

The decision to move on came after this year’s team had the best record in the league, but lost in the first round of the playoffs to the Miami Heat, in only 5 games. It was just the 6th time ever that a #1 seed had fallen to a #8 seed.

And Budenholzer had been criticized for his decision-making during back-to-back collapses in Games 4 and 5 to settle their fate. Budenholzer did not use timeouts during either 4th quarter meltdown. And in overtime of the decisive Game 5, Budenholzer left two timeouts on the table as Milwaukee failed to get a shot off when they had the ball down by two points for the the final 10 seconds.

The coach reportedly lost his brother in a car accident just before Game 4 of that series.

“Coach Bud is going through a lot on a personal level,” said Lakers coach Darvin Ham (who had long served as Budenholzer’s assistant before leaving for Los Angeles). “He just lost a brother, so, my apologies, Bud, if I wasn’t supposed to let anybody know. He and I’ve been texting. I love those guys. They’re a part of my basketball family.”

Charlie Blackmon had two hits and two RBIs, and the Colorado Rockies used a five-run eighth inning to earn a 9-6 come-from-behind victory against the Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday.

With the victory, the Rockies extended their season-best win streak to four games and won for the sixth time in their past nine games after starting the season 6-17.

“With the talent we have on the field, it’s incredible,” Rockies infielder Mike Moustakas said. “Early on in the season, guys are still feeling around, seeing who they are, seeing how the big leagues work. Now, guys are settling in and getting comfortable.”

For the Brewers, it was their fourth consecutive loss, their longest drought of the season, and their seventh defeat in their past 10 games following a 15-6 start. Entering the day, they were 15-1 this season when scoring at least four runs.

Trailing 4-0, Colorado tied the game with a four-run seventh inning that was jump-started by Ezequiel Tovar’s two-run double that chased Milwaukee starter Wade Miley from the game.  Miley had given up just one hit in the first five innings.

After Harold Castro’s pinch-hit, two-run single to left field in the eighth inning gave the Rockies their first lead of the game at 6-4, Elias Diaz brought another run home with a sacrifice fly to right field and Blackmon’s two-run single to center field made it 9-4.

Christian Yelich, Rowdy Tellez and Tyrone Taylor each hit solo homers for the Brewers, with Yelich and Tellez’s shots coming in the first inning.

It was Tellez’s seventh home run in the past 18 games. Yelich finished with three hits and two RBIs after entering the game in a slump, with only two hits in his past 22 at-bats.

Kris Bryant and Mike Moustakas each finished with two hits for the Rockies. Bryant has hit safely in 23 of his past 29 games.

Brad Hand (1-1) threw one shutout inning to earn the win for Colorado.

Peter Strzelecki (2-2), who gave up five runs in one-third of an inning, took the loss for Milwaukee..

The Brewers continue their road trip tonight.  RHP Corbin Burnes (3-1) will face off against San Francisco.  First pitch is at 9:15 CDT.

Elsewhere in the NL Central Thursday  the Nationals nipped the Cubs 4-3, the Rays slipped past the Pirates 3-2 and the Angels beat the Cardinals 11-7.  The Brewers trail the Pirates by 1 ½ games in the division.

The 149th running of the Kentucky Derby is Saturday at Churchill Downs.  It’s the oldest continuously running sports event in the country.

On the PGA Tour Tommy Fleetwood shot 6 under Thursday to take the first round lead in the Wells Fargo Championship.  He leads five other golfers by a stroke entering today’s second round.

In the NBA Playoffs Thursday night the Golden State Warriors bounced back from a game one loss to the Lakers, to win 127-100 at home.
