FDL MAN CHARGED FOR RUNNING FROM MAYVILLE POLICE
A 24-year-old Fond du Lac man is facing a felony fleeing charge for allegedly running from Mayville Police after a traffic stop on Highway 28 last month. Evan Clark was pulled over after speeding past a semi-truck and squad car in a no passing zone. Clark failed to cooperate with the officer who stopped him, taking off when the two wrestled over the vehicle’s keys. He sped away driving through backyards before abandoning his vehicle and fleeing on foot. He was found a short time later near the Rock River. At gunpoint he allegedly refused commands and jumped into the cold river. But the frigid temperatures caused him to give up. In addition to the fleeing charge he is charged with resisting or obstructing an officer and possession of drug paraphernalia. Clark will make his initial appearance in Dodge County court next Monday.
FDL COMPANY CLOSING
About 80 workers at an institutional furniture manufacturer in Fond du Lac will be laid off. The state’s Department of Workforce Development received a letter May 1st from Elkay Interior Systems President and CEO Tony Lutz advising the state agency that the plant at 525 West Rolling Meadows Drive is closing permanently and 77 employees will be laid off. The layoffs will begin June 30th and will be completed by October 6th. Employees being permanently laid off are in both hourly and salary positions.
SEX OFFENDER HOUSING
Given the state’s restrictions on where a violent sex offender can be placed, Fond du Lac County Sheriff Ryan Waldschmidt says the county board’s approval of the purchase of a second temporary housing unit was the right thing to do. The board last month approved spending $200,000 to purchase the unit and place it at the Highway Department facilities on the south edge of Fond du Lac. Waldschmidt says deputies are constantly going there to fuel their squad cars and for other needs so they have eyes on the offender’s housing units quite often. He says they train out there, get maintenance done on their squad cars out there, and have a storage building out there plus there are cameras out there. He says the facility is surrounded by farmland with just a couple of businesses located in the area.
