Jimmy Butler scored 42 points and the Miami Heat staged a second straight stunning fourth-quarter rally before winning 128-126 in overtime on Wednesday night in Game 5 to complete an upset of the top-seeded Bucks in their Eastern Conference first-round playoff series.
Two nights after outscoring the Bucks 30-13 in the final six minutes of a 119-115 victory in Miami, the Heat produced another huge comeback and tied the game on Butler’s layup with half a second left in regulation.
Miami went on to become the sixth No. 8 seed to beat a No. 1 seed. The last time it happened was in 2012, when a Philadelphia 76ers team featuring current Bucks guard Jrue Holiday capitalized on Derrick Rose’s knee injury to beat the top-seeded Chicago Bulls.
The Heat advanced to a second-round series with the fifth-seeded New York Knicks, who completed their 4-1 series win over the Cleveland Cavaliers earlier Wednesday. Game 1 is Sunday in New York.
Bam Adebayo had 20 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. Gabe Vincent added 22 points.
Giannis Antetokounmpo had 38 points and 20 rebounds for the Bucks, though he shot just 10 of 23 on free-throw attempts. Khris Middleton added 33 points.
Milwaukee led 102-86 after three quarters but shot just 5 of 25 from the floor in the fourth quarter and overtime.
The Heat tied the game on two occasions late in the fourth quarter before Middleton made two free throws to put Milwaukee back ahead with 27.8 seconds left.
Then things really got interesting.
After calling a timeout, the Heat got the ball to Butler, whose 3-point attempt missed with 18 seconds left. Holiday made two free throws with 14 seconds remaining to make it a four-point game, but Vincent’s 3-pointer cut the lead to one with 8.4 seconds left.
The Bucks had the ball in the backcourt when Holiday threw an errant pass that eluded Middleton. Miami’s Kyle Lowry initially was called for a foul as he chased the loose ball, but the Heat successfully challenged the call and it was ruled a jump ball.
Brook Lopez tipped the ball to Antetokounmpo, whose pass nearly went out of bounds before Middleton saved it to Holiday. After getting fouled with 2.1 seconds left, Holiday missed his first free throw before sinking the second to make it 118-116.
After the Heat called timeout, Vincent stood in front of the Bucks bench and threw an inbounds pass to Butler, who was waiting under the basket to make the tying score.
In other NBA playoff games the Knicks beat the Cavs 106-95 to win their series 4-1. The Grizzlies downed the Lakers 116-99 but Los Angeles leads 3-2 and the Warrior beat the Kings 123-116 to take a 3-2 lead in their series.
The NFL draft begins tonight and runs through Saturday. Green Bay has the 13th pick in the first round, the 11th and 14th picks in the second round and the 14th pick in the fourth round. The Packers also have the 14th pick in round five, the 30th pick in round six and four picks in round seven. The draft begins at 7:00 from Chicago.
Aaron Rodgers believes he’s where he needs to be. And the New York Jets’ new quarterback thinks they can do big things together.
The four-time NFL MVP was introduced by the team Wednesday to much fanfare in the team’s auditorium, filled with media, coaches and team staffers – flanked on the stage by coach Robert Saleh to his left and general manager Joe Douglas on his right.
“This is a surreal day for me,” the 39-year-old Rodgers said.
The team officially announced the trade for Rodgers moments before he entered the auditorium.
The Jets received Rodgers, the No. 15 overall pick and a fifth-rounder this year from the Packers. In exchange, Green Bay got the 13th overall selection, a second-rounder, a sixth-rounder and a conditional 2024 second-round pick that could become a first-rounder if Rodgers plays 65% of New York’s plays this season.
Rodgers spent his first 18 seasons in Green Bay, helping the Packers win one Super Bowl while establishing himself as one of the game’s greatest quarterbacks.
“That chapter is over now and I’m excited about the new adventure here in New York,” Rodgers said.
Rodgers said he chose the Jets because he believes in the direction the franchise is heading with a young core of players that includes Offensive Rookie of the Year in Garrett Wilson and Defensive Rookie of the Year in Sauce Gardner.
“I’m an old guy, so I want to be at a place that can win it all and I believe we can do that here,” he said.
Rodgers knows about the Jets’ playoff drought, which at 12 seasons is the longest active skid in the NFL. He’s also aware of the team not making a Super Bowl appearance since Joe Namath led them there in 1969.
“That Super Bowl III trophy is looking a little lonely,” Rodgers said.
Rodgers wouldn’t commit to playing beyond this season, saying he’s focused on this upcoming year and staying in the area “for the foreseeable future.”
Victor Caratini and rookie Joey Wiemer homered to back Freddy Peralta, leading the Milwaukee Brewers over the Detroit Tigers 6-2 on Wednesday to avoid a series sweep and stop a three-game losing streak.
Detroit shortstop Javier Báez, who entered with a 10-game hitting streak, left in the first inning after being struck on the left hand by a 93 mph Peralta pitch. The Tigers said Báez’s hand was bruised and X-rays were negative.
Peralta (3-2) allowed a pair of unearned runs and four hits over six innings with a season-high eight strikeouts and no walks. He rebounded from a pair of poor outings in which he gave up nine earned runs in 10 2/3 innings. Bryse Wilson, Hoby Milner, Peter Strzelecki and Devin Williams finished a six-hitter.
Michael Lorenzen (0-1), making his third start, gave up five runs and seven hits in five innings. He threw 100 pitches, 63 for strikes.
Milwaukee took a 3-0 lead in the first when Christian Yelich was hit by a pitch, Jesse Winker walked, Rowdy Tellez hit an RBI double and Brian Anderson added a two-run single. Caratini added a two-run homer in the third for a 5-0 lead.
After Anderson misplayed Nick Maton’s fly to right for an error in the fourth, Detroit scored a pair of unearned runs on the first of Akil Baddoo’s two doubles and Jake Rogers’ run-scoring single.
Wiemer homered against Tyler Holton in the eighth.
Milwaukee recalled RHP Tyson Miller from Nashville and optioned LHP Alex Claudio to the Triple-A affiliate.
The Brewer are off today. Milwaukee hosts the Anaheim Angels for a three-game series starting Friday night. LHP Wade Miley (3-1, 1.96) will start the first game for Milwaukee. Miley is 5-1 with a 3.30 ERA in eight starts against the Angels.
Elsewhere in the NL Central Wednesday the Reds beat the Rangers 5-3, the Pirates over the Dodgers 8-1, the Padres downed the Cubs 5-3 and the Giants defeated the Cardinals 7-3.
