The Packers have reportedly completed the long-awaited trade to send quarterback Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets. ESPN’s Adam Schefter was the first to report the terms.
The Packers’ reportedly will swap their #15 overall pick in the 1st round with New York, to move up two spots to #13 overall. Green Bay also reportedly gets the Jets’ first 2nd round pick this (#42 overall) and a 6th round pick this year. In 2024, the Packers will get the Jets’ 1st round selection if Rodgers played 65% of the Jets’ offensive snaps this season. Green Bay gets a 2024 2nd round pick if Rodgers does not meet that playing time threshold.
General manager Brian Gutekunst said during his pre-draft press conference the trade has not been finalized, but he would have more information later in the week. Getting picks right away in this year’s draft was paramount for the Packers.
“I just think, certainly, the capital for this year was very important,” Gutekunst said. “Certainly more valuable than certain stuff for our football team. So there were a number of reasons, but that’s why. We are expected it to be done very quickly, hopefully soon, a lot of things have been agreed on but there are some things to go through. Those are significant so we are not there yet, but we are expecting to have that done before the draft. Hopefully there is some finality for everybody in it.”
The GM did talk about the team’s mindset this offseason as they decided to move on from their 4-time MVP.
“We were 8-9 last year,” Gutekunst said. “You know what I mean? We are trying to get better. And I think that’s important. We are chasing Super Bowls, right? And that’s an important thing. And that is what this is about. It’s not always going to be easy. And it’s not always going to go smoothly.”
Gutekunst views the team’s best opportunity to get back to glory as with Jordan Love at quarterback. Gutekunst says a lot of Love’s improvement was on display when Rodgers was injured last year. Love took the #1 reps in practice and passed those practice rep tests with flying colors.
“I just think you saw him grow and grow and grow,” Gutekunst said. “He didn’t get as many opportunities as we would have liked in games last season, but when he did he certainly answered the bell.”
Green Bay and New York will swap picks in the first round of this year’s draft with the Packers now selecting first at number 13, and the Jets taking the 15th pick.
The Packers also receive one of the Jets second round picks, number 42 overall, and a sixth rounder in this year’s draft. There’s a conditional 2nd round pick in 2024 that could become a first rounder if Rodgers takes 65 percent of the offensive snaps this season.
According to Schefter, talks between the two sides broke down briefly before they re-engaged last week. Eventually completing a deal to send Rodgers to the Jets more than a month after the quarterback said he intended to play for New York this upcoming season.
This is the second time the Packers and Jets have collaborated on a trade for a future Hall of Fame quarterback. In 2008, the Jets acquired Brett Favre in exchange for a conditional fourth round pick.
Jimmy Butler had the game of his life, and the Miami Heat had a comeback for the ages.
Butler scored 56 points — tying the fourth-best scoring performance ever in an NBA playoff game — and the Heat roared back from 14 points down in the final quarter to stun the Milwaukee Bucks 119-114 on Monday night to put the NBA’s top overall seed on the brink of early elimination.
The 56 points also became Butler’s career high. He was 19 for 28 from the field, 15 of 18 from the foul line and added nine rebounds for eighth-seeded Miami — which took a 3-1 lead over the Bucks in their Eastern Conference first-round series.
Brook Lopez scored 36 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for Milwaukee. Giannis Antetokounmpo returned from a two-game absence with a bruised back and had a triple-double — 26 points, 10 rebounds and 13 assists.
And the Bucks — who now need to win three straight, starting with Game 5 at Milwaukee on Wednesday — led almost the whole way, until the Heat roared back in the final minutes.
“We didn’t make enough plays on either end,” Bucks coach Mike Budenholzer said. “And they did.”
Butler had 21 of his points in the fourth, and the Heat still trailed 101-89 after a layup by Lopez with 6:09 left.
That’s when a 13-0 run, capped by a Butler dunk off a Bucks turnover, put Miami up for the first time all night with 3:17 left — 102-101.
The lead changed hands four more times, and Butler’s 3-pointer with 1:20 left put Miami ahead for good. He added a step-back jumper on Miami’s next possession, punched the air in celebration, and the Heat knew they would soon be leaving with a 3-1 lead.
Bam Adebayo scored 15, Caleb Martin had 12 and Gabe Vincent scored 10 for the Heat.
Antetokounmpo missed Games 2 and 3 of the series — and most of Game 1 — with a bruised lower back. He worked out Sunday, went through shootaround with the Bucks on Monday and got cleared to play
Elsewhere in the NBA playoffs Monday the Lakers beat the Grizzlies 117-111 and lead their series 3-1.
Tonight, Atlanta is at Boston, Denver hosts Minnesota and the Clippers are at the Suns.
Nick Maton had a three-run homer and Matthew Boyd pitched effectively for five innings to lead the Detroit Tigers to a 4-2 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Monday night.
Boyd (1-1) allowed two runs on five hits in five innings, striking out eight and walking one as the Brewers lost consecutive games for the first time this season.
José Cisnero, Tyler Holton and Jason Foley each tossed a scoreless inning and Alex Lange finished with a perfect ninth for his second save in three chances.
Maton put the Tigers up 3-1 in the third, salvaging the inning with his homer off Colin Rae (0-1). Detroit had three walks and two hits in the inning, but had a runner caught stealing and another caught in a rundown. Javy Báez’s two-out single put two aboard, and Maton sent a 3-1 pitch 390 feet to right for his fourth homer.
Mike Brosseau answered in the bottom half with his third homer to make it 3-2.
Detroit made it 4-2 in the fifth when Eric Haase doubled to open, advanced on a ground out, and then slid home ahead of the tag on a bouncer to second.
Rae (0-1), making his third start since being called up after Brandon Woodruff went on the injured list, allowed four runs on five hits in five innings, walking four with one strikeout.
Milwaukee loaded the bases with one out in the fourth on three singles, but Boyd escaped when Joey Wiemer flied to center and Blake Perkins struck out.
William Contreras staked the Brewers to a 1-0 lead in the first with his first homer, a two-out solo shot to center.
LHP Eric Lauer (3-1, 4.30 ERA) starts for the Brewers on Tuesday, opposed by RHP Spencer Turnbull (1-3, 7.85).
In other games Monday in the NL Central the Reds nipped the Rangers 7-6 and the Giants shutout the Cardinals 4-0.
