Masataka Yoshida homered twice during Boston’s nine-run outburst in the eighth inning as the Red Sox rallied to beat the Milwaukee Brewers 12-5 on Sunday.
JJustin Turner and Yoshida started the eighth with back-to-back homers off Matt Bush (0-1) that gave the Red Sox a 5-4 lead. Yoshida then capped the inning with a grand slam off Javy Guerra that landed in the second deck of right-field seats. Yoshida ended up driving in six runs. He also had a sacrifice fly in the first.
Boston bounced back after blowing an early 3-0 lead to move above .500 and win the weekend series. The Brewers’ loss enabled the Pittsburgh Pirates to overtake them for the NL Central lead.
Yoshida became the fifth Red Sox player to homer twice in one inning, and first since Hall of Fame slugger David Ortiz in August 2008. Nomar Garciaparra (2002), Ellis Burks (1990) and Bill Regan (1928) are the others.
Brian Anderson went deep twice for the Brewers. Joey Wiemer singled, doubled and scored two runs. Wiemer gave Milwaukee a 4-3 lead in the seventh by scoring on a wild pitch from Kaleb Ort (1-0). The Red Sox wasted no time regaining the lead.
Turner led off the eighth by sending an 0-1 pitch over the left-field wall to tie the game. Yoshida followed by ripping a 1-2 curveball over the fence in right.
Bush has allowed four homers in 7 2/3 innings this season. His ERA ballooned to 8.22 after getting charged with four runs in one-third of an inning. Since the Brewers acquired him at last year’s trade deadline, Bush has given up 10 homers in 30 2/3 innings.
The Red Sox did even more damage after those back-to-back blasts.
Bush allowed a double to Kiké Hernández, retired Triston Casas on a diving catch by right fielder Blake Perkins and walked Jarren Duran before leaving the game. Connor Wong greeted Guerra with a two-run single up the middle to extend Boston’s lead to 7-4.
Turner came up a second time in the inning and drew a bases-loaded walk from Guerra to make it 8-4. Yoshida followed with his 407-foot slam.
The Red Sox took a 3-0 lead in the first two innings off Corbin Burnes, who was pitching six days after leaving a 7-3 victory at Seattle in the sixth with a left pectoral strain. The 2021 NL Cy Young Award winner struck out five but allowed five hits and three walks in five innings. Two of the three runs he permitted were earned.
Red Sox starter Brayan Bello struck out three and allowed five hits, three runs and two walks in 4 2/3 innings.
The Brewers open a three-game home series with the Detroit Tigers on Monday. RHP Colin Rea (0-0, 4.22) will pitch for the Brewers, while LHP Matthew Boyd (0-1, 4.5) starts for the Tigers.
Elsewhere in the NL Central Sunday the Pirates shutout the Reds 2-0, the Dodgers beat the Cubs 7-3 and the Cardinals downed the Mariners 7-3.
Jimmy Butler scored 30 points before leaving with back soreness following a hard fall, and the eighth-seeded Miami Heat beat the top-seeded Milwaukee Bucks 121-99 on Saturday night for a 2-1 lead in their Eastern Conference first-round playoff series.
Duncan Robinson scored 20 points on his 29th birthday for Miami, while Kyle Lowry scored 15 for the Heat.
The Bucks were without Giannis Antetokounmpo for a second consecutive game because of a bruised lower back. Khris Middleton scored 23 points, Jrue Holiday added 19 and Grayson Allen scored 14 for Milwaukee.
As for the status of Antetokounmpo tonight in game four, Coach Mike Budenholzer said Sunday, “We’ll continue to monitor him. “He did some individual work today on the court, and we’ll see how he feels from the session today and see how he wakes up tomorrow.”
Game 4 is in Miami on Monday night.
In the NBA Playoffs Sunday the Knicks beat the Cavs 106-93 and lead their series 3-1. The Warriors nipped the Clippers 126-125 to tie their series at 2-2. The Celtics beat the Hawks 129-121 and lead that series 3-2. The Timberwolves down the Nuggets 114-108 and lead their series 3-1.
On the men’s PGA Tour, the team of Davis Riley and Nick Hardy both earned their first PGA Tour titles on Sunday, teaming to win the Zurich Classic in New Orleans. Nick Taylor and Adam Hadwin finished two strokes back.
In Nascar Sunday, Kyle Busch ignored a call to take a pit stop during a pair of overtime restarts and went on to win the GEICO 500 at Talladega Superspeedway Sunday afternoon.
Busch’s No. 8 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet had just enough gas to make it back to the checkered flag as a half dozen other lead pack cars around him were collected in a multi-car accident while maneuvering forward to challenge for the lead on the final overtime lap.
Ryan Blaney finished second, followed by Chris Buescher, Chase Briscoe and Brad Kesolowski to round out the top five.
The Packers and Jets recently re-engaged in trade talks for star quarterback Aaron Rodgers, according to a report by Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network.
The reporting saying the deal is not imminent, but the two sides are talking with the hopes of having the deal done this week. Coincidentally the NFL Draft starts this Thursday with the Jets holding the 13th pick, and the Packers soon after at number 15.
Much of the reporting around possible compensation for the four time MVP centers around draft picks, whether that’s in this year’s draft or later. Currently New York holds just six picks in this year’s draft with Green Bay set to select ten times.
Also, does Rodgers’ massive contract need to be reworked? According to a Sunday morning report from ESPN, that requirement is not necessary. Rodgers is due over nearly $59 million this year.
More than a month ago Rodgers said on the Pat McAfee Show he intended to play next year for the Jets, and reports of talks between the two teams soon followed. While reports of talks between the Jets and Packers front offices have slowed, New York general manager Joe Douglas said “he’s gonna be here” when asked about the possible trade on April 7th.
The NFL suspended five players for violating the league’s gambling policy on Friday.
Detroit Lions wide receiver Quintez Cephus and safety C.J. Moore and Washington Commanders defensive end Shaka Toney were suspended indefinitely, while Lions wide receivers Stanley Berryhill and Jameson Williams were suspended six games.
Cephus, a former Wisconsin Badger, Moore and Toney are suspended indefinitely through at least the conclusion of the 2023 season for betting on NFL games in the 2022 season, and may petition for reinstatement at the conclusion of the 2023 season.
Berryhill and Williams were suspended for betting from an NFL facility on non-NFL games. They are eligible to participate in all offseason and preseason activities, including preseason games., and their suspensions will take effect at the final roster cutdown.
In a release, the NFL said that a “league review uncovered no evidence indicating any inside information was used or that any game was compromised in any way.”
The Lions released Cephus and Moore on Friday.
Detroit Lions executive vice president and general manager Brad Holmes said in a statement that the players “exhibited decision making that is not consistent with our organizational values and violates league rules.”
Holmes also said that the team will work with Stanley and Jameson “to ensure they understand the severity of these violations and have clarity on the league rules moving forward.”
The Commanders said in a statement that the team has “cooperated fully with the NFL’s investigation since receiving notice and support the league’s findings and actions.”
