From Wayne Mausser

An MRI on Giannis Antetokounmpo’s back on Monday came back clean, according to head coach Mike Budenholzer, giving the Bucks optimism their star may be available for Wednesday’s Game Two against Miami.

Antetokounmpo left Sunday’s loss to the Heat after playing just eleven minutes due to what the team called a lower back contusion. Giannis suffered the injury late in the first quarter after he fell hard to the Fiserv Forum floor while drawing a charge against Kevin Love.

“He’s still sore but I think progress and he’s getting some treatment. I think we’ll just continue to monitor him for the next, whatever, the next day or two. Probably fortunate there’s two games between games. So, I think still mostly positive, mostly optimistic,” said Mike Budenholzer.

As a team, the Bucks had only a film session on Monday as they collectively look to bounce back from a game where they allowed the Heat to shoot 59.7 percent from the field and 60 percent from beyond the three point line. Both are well above Miami’s averages from the regular season.

“I just think there’s a lot of confidence. You’ve built up a body of work. The players, it’s a roster that’s built with a lot of talent, a lot of toughness, a lot of character, and I think they usually respond. There’s a ton of confidence, a ton of belief and understanding how the playoffs, it’s never easy. So, the group will be ready,” said Budenholzer.

Game Two between the Bucks and Heat is set for Wednesday at 8 p.m. in Milwaukee.

In the NBA playoffs Monday night, the 76ers beat the Nets 96-84 and the Kings downed the Warriors 114-106.

Corbin Burnes and the Brewers were optimistic that the right-hander wouldn’t have to miss his next start after abruptly exiting during the sixth inning of the Brewers 7-3 win over the Mariners on Monday at T-Mobile Park. Burnes has a left pectoral strain, which was described as “minor” by both him and manager Craig Counsell after the game. But considering the team is only days removed from a similarly minor issue that became something more significant for Burnes’ co-ace, Brandon Woodruff, everyone will be especially careful in the coming days.

“It’s something that I think is very minor that could have gotten worse if I had kept going,” Burnes said. “There hasn’t been any talk of pushing back [the next start] or anything.”

The Brewers won for the fourth time in five days with the victory Monday, and ensured that they’d finish at least .500 on the 10-game, three-city western road trip by continuing to have the balanced offense and solid pitching that has carried Milwaukee to a 12-5 start. They tallied 10 hits, but only third baseman Brian Anderson (3-for-5, team-best 15th RBI) had a multihit night. No hitter had multiple RBIs.

The Brewers scored three runs in the third and Seattle one in the bottom half of the inning.  Both teams scored a run in the sixth and Milwaukee scored two in the seventh and one in the ninth while the Mariners scored a single run in the eighth.  Bryce Turang hit his second homer of the season for the Brewers, a solo shot in the seventh.

Burnes (2-1) picked up the win, going 5 1/3 innings, giving up two runs on three hits while striking out three and walking two. Four relievers finished up.

Chris Flexen (0-3) took the loss, going six innings, giving up four runs on six hits, while striking out five and walking one.

The teams meet again tonight as Colin Rea (0-0) starts for Milwaukee against Seattle’s Logan Gilbert (1-1).  First pitch is at 8:40 CDT.

Elsewhere in the NL Central Monday the Reds downed the Rays 8-1, the Diamondbacks over the Cardinals 6-3, the Pirates pounded the Rockies 14-3 and the Cubs beat up on the A’s 10-1.

Packers tackle Yosh Nijman signed his restricted free agent tender on Monday, according to a report by ESPN’s Field Yates.

Green Bay previously placed a second round tender on Nijman. That mean’s he’ll make $4.3 million dollars on a one year deal, according to ESPN’s Rob Demovsky.  Nijman started 13 games last season for the Packers, playing primarily at right tackle after filling in at left tackle in place of David Bakhtiari in 2021.

Jalen Hurts is set to sign one of the richest deals in NFL history, agreeing to a five-year, $255 million extension with the Philadelphia Eagles, including $179.3 million guaranteed, a person with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press.

The Eagles announced on Monday ” QB! Is here to stay” ” but terms were not yet announced, according to the person who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the deal was not yet final. Hurts was rewarded for his breakout season when he was named an AP NFL MVP finalist and led the Eagles to the Super Bowl, where they lost to the Kansas City Chiefs.

“Keeping the main thing in Philly,” the Eagles tweeted. “We’ve agreed to terms with Jalen Hurts on a 5-year extension through the 2028 season.”

The 24-year-old Hurts was expected to receive $51 million per season, and only only Deshaun Watson ($230M) and Kyler Murray ($189.5M) received more in a single contract.

Hurts delivered a record performance in the Super Bowl, throwing for 304 yards and a touchdown, running for 70 yards and three scores and adding a game-tying 2-point conversion.

Philadelphia went 14-1 in his starts and he had 3,701 yards passing, 760 yards rushing and 35 touchdowns combined in the regular season. He led the Eagles under coach Nick Sirianni to the top seed in the NFC and a playoff victory over the New York Giants and over the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC championship game.

The Eagles went 0-2 when Hurts sat out two late-season games because of a sprained right shoulder.

The Eagles stunned their fans when they drafted Hurts out of Oklahoma in the second round in 2020. They seemingly had Carson Wentz entrenched at QB and had more pressing needs. Hurt was expected to serve as insurance for Wentz. Instead, he supplanted him and became one of the top young quarterbacks in the NFL.

A wild deer from Winnebago County tested positive for chronic wasting disease. A 3-year-old doe that was reported to be sick was put down by a sheriff’s deputy and tested.

It’s the first case of CWD in Winnebago County.  The deer was found in the town of Nepeuskun, within 10 miles of Winnebago County’s borders with Fond du Lac, Green Lake and Waushara counties.

The DNR and Winnebago County Deer Advisory Council will hold a meeting on April 25 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Omro Town Hall, 4205 Rivermoor Rd., to provide information about CWD. They’ll discuss local testing efforts and disease surveillance options that are being considered.

State law will require a baiting and feeding ban in Winnebago County for three years and, because of their proximity, a ban in Fond du Lac, Green Lake and Waushara counties for two years. Those counties have already had bans in place.

CWD infects the nervous systems of deer, moose, elk, and reindeer and caribou. It’s fatal and can spread to other deer through direct contact or by any feces, urine, blood or saliva an infected deer leaves behind.
