After losing Monday night at Arizona 3-0, the Brewers bounced back with three home runs and a strong outing from Corbin Burnes to defeat the Diamondbacks 7-1.
Burnes (1-1) and Merrill Kelly (0-2) were locked in a scoreless duel for six innings before the Crew broke loose for five runs in the seventh. Willy Adames broke the scoreless duel with a solo homer and the Milwaukee’s bats came alive. The Brewers added four more runs in the seventh inning, anchored by a two-run double by Mike Brosseau. Milwaukee capped off the night with home runs from Rowdy Tellez and Brosseau, who is seeing more playing time while Jesse Winker is sidelined with an illness. The Brewers continued their hot start by improving to 8-3 and will look to keep the momentum going through the end of this 10-game road trip.
Burnes struck out eight and issued no walks in eight innings as the Brewers upped their record to 8-3.
The Brewers and D-backs close out their series this afternoon as Janson Junk starts for Milwaukee against Arizona’s Drey Jameson (2-0). First pitch is at 2:40 CDT.
Elsewhere in the NL Central Tuesday the Pirates beat the Astros 7-4, the Braves edged the Reds 7-6, the Cubs pounded Seattle 14-9 and the Cardinals downed the Rockies 9-6.
Brewers starter Brandon Woodruff is being placed on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to April 8, with right shoulder inflammation. In a corresponding move, Milwaukee called up right-hander Janson Junk from Triple-A Nashville.
Woodruff, who was slated to start Wednesday’s series finale against the D-backs, said he felt tight at the end of his last start against the Cardinals and felt as though he was “running out of gas.” Manager Craig Counsell did not announce a replacement starter for Wednesday, but all signs point toward Junk, who has thrown in two games and allowed one run over 10 innings with Nashville this season.
The good news is that Woodruff and Counsell feel confident that the 30-year-old righty will make a quick recovery.
“My hope is that in about a week I should be fine. It shouldn’t require the full 15 days,” Woodruff said.
The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers defeated the Peoria Chiefs 8-3 in front of 3,180 fans for the warmest home opener in franchise history.
Wisconsin (2-2) grabbed the lead in the bottom of the first inning on a 75-degree night. Eric Brown Jr, who was making his Timber Rattlers debut, started the frame with a single, went to second on a wild pitch, and took third on a sacrifice bunt. Joe Gray Jr knocked in Brown with an infield grounder.
The T-Rats added to their lead in the second as they loaded the bases with no outs. Je’Von Ward ripped a double to the wall in right field to score two runs for a 3-0 advantage.
In the third, Ernesto Martinez Jr gave the fans in the new seating area above the wall in left field something to remember as he lined a two-run home run to them for a 5-0 lead.
Peoria (0-4) got back into the game in the top of the fourth inning on some sloppy defense by the Timber Rattlers behind starting pitcher Tyler Woessner.
Woessner, who had retired nine of the first ten batters he faced in the game, went back out for the fifth inning and pitched around a one-out walk in the frame to qualify for his first professional win. The Rattlers starter struck out five and walked two before he turned the game over to the bullpen.
In the seventh, the Chiefs had a threat going against Russell Smith with two runners on and one out. Smith rose to the challenge and struck out the next two batters to maintain the lead.
Game two of the series is Wednesday afternoon at Neuroscience Group Field. Alexander Cornielle is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. The Chiefs will counter with Zane Mills. Game time is 12:10pm.
The Packers started their Tailgate Tour that will take them to a number of cities around the state. President and CEO Mark Murphy said he expects a lot of questions on what’s going on with Aaron Rodgers and his wish to be traded to the New York Jets. A number of players are also on the bus, including running back Aaron Jones.
